Here's the setup:1 home desktop wired (Windows 7 Premium)1 work desktop wired (Windows 7 Premium)1 work laptop wireless(Vista Business)1 laptop wireless (kids) running Vista Home1 laptop wireless (kids) running XP just added1 netbook (wife) with Win 7 starter Fought homegroup, so turned that off on all Windows 7 machines. Every computer on the network can see the netbook (and all other computers). But you can't connect to it.On the netbook, it can not see any wired computer, but can see the wireless computer (other than the Vista business computer). So I hooked an ethernet cable and the netbook can see the entire network.All computers belong to WORKGROUP. The netbook can connect to the router and internet just fine. End result is I need to see the network so my wife can print from the internet to the network printer (on my main desktop). I'm pretty good when it comes to working this stuff out (had computers since 1984), but I spent the better part of this afternoon to no avail.Using Windows Firewall, MS Security EssentialsNetwork discovery is on, file sharing is on.I have tried multiple solutions posted on here and at Microsoft Answers, none work.Is it possible that within Win7 Starter, that there is a limitation for wireless networking, keeping in mind the connection to the internet works fine, it's just not being able to connect to the intranet that is causing me the pain?

Hi, Is there any error message when accessing the Intranet? Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Connect the router via wired cable instead and access Intranet again. Does the issue persist? 2. Temporarily turn off firewall and antivirus program on each machine for a test. 3. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Network to check the result. 4. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". b. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e. Click "OK". f. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". g. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". h. Click "OK". i. Had tried each and every one of those multiple times. No help whatsoever. It works fine with an ethernet connection, so I know it's something to do with the wireless connection. But other computers in the house have no problem with the wireless connection (1 Vista, 1 XP), only the one with Win7 Starter is giving the problem.

Make sure all computers on the wireless network have the same "Workgroup" To do this right click "Computer" in start menu and click "Properties" Scroll down to "Computr Name.....settings" Click "Change Settings" Under "computer Name" tab, click "Change" In Workgroup box type the same workgroup name for every computer on network Click "Apply" Reboot Every computer in the workgroup and on the network will be seen under network I hope this helps. BTW, you can set sharing permissions here too.

I seem to be having the same issues with my home network. Every Wireless client except the netbooks can see other wireless or wired clients. Even if I boot them into Ubuntu Linux they still cannot connect to the wired clients on my network. Confirmed there is somethingwrong with the Broadcom BCM43xx Wireless adapter. If I use my Netgear USB Wireless G adapter on either of my netbooksthey can see the wired side of my network just fine.

I am having issues also. When I initially connected wirelessly with aWin 7 Starter netbook I could see and stream dvr-ms from an XP Media Center external HDD to my netbook. This ability gradually went away over a few days after a few Critical Updates, and now I cant even see the XP machine on the network. Nothing I try works. File sharing enabled, work groups the same, guest accounts set up, firewalls off, anti-virus uninstalled, nothing... The odd thing is that before I uninstalled McAffee it could see all the machines on the network correctly, but they wouldn't appear on the Windows Networking Connections pages.It can see Vista machines both wirelessly and running off the same router as the XP, and the XP can see a Vista machine on the LAN, but not the other Vista machine wirelessly, when it could before.I think I have just been 'critical updated' into Premium Edition.

I am having similar issues with Gateway netbook running Windows 7 starter. When I first set up the netbook, I was able to add a printer that is connected to my desktop via my wireless network. The netbook could print fine wirelessly. Since then I changed from a Linksys wireless router to a Netgear WPN824. I can not add the network printer back to the netbook (it does not see it). I thought it was due to a router issue, but I wonder if Microsoft has disabled the ability to share a printer in the starter edition?

I am having issues with Win7 Starter as well with my girl's Inspiron. I was able to share my printer (hooked up to my wired desktop) with her netbook, but the shared drives (on two XP desktops) do not show up. That's not quite true... one drive showed up ONCE and I was able to access it, but that was it. Why the devil would it show up that once?! I bought an Asus Eee with XP because I love XP and don't want my first experience with 7 to be the featureless starter edition. Anyway, the Asus netbook works fine with my network.So LamarYarbrough, just giving you hope that you can add a network printer in 7 Starter. Now that that's done though, I've given up trying to get her access to the shared drives.

Novak, I too have gone through all your steps and googled for other forum and have tried their hints also. I purchased this Toshiba NB305 with Windows7 Starter and slowly but surely any machine that is not running Windows7 has disapeared..... On this thread you are the only one who has given any ideas for a 'fix' and all others have stated they have the same issue. WHAT GIVES???? Very Up Setting.... Is it time for M.S. CEO to accept responseablity like Toyota's CEO ???

Hi I bought a Vaio series W netbook, and of course it camer with the lame version Windows 7 starter. i am not a computer geek nor have I finagled to much with the network settings, however all computers see each other and can access shared drives and files. it has beena learning experience of how to make files and folders shared but all 3computers see each other (both wired and wireless) 1 desktop w/ Vista Home Premium 1 desktop w/ XP SP3 1 Netbook w/ 7 Starter If I can help sharing my settings I will be more than happy to do so. Having said that it would be nice to be able to share in groups across the different versions, but 7 Starter does not consider we have earned that privilege yet Cheers

It looks to me like MS is full of S#(%! The router is already connected to the wired cable ex: the internet! the problem is Windows 7 Home Starter. You cant even change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Home Starter! MS spends more moolah in the Marketing and Legal department than they do the R&D! Furthermore, the "MSFT Moderator" is a phucking "robot" that takes in statistical data from forum posts and provides "cookie cutter" answers. it would appear that the marketing department worked very hard with research and development to create a version of windows that forces consumers to purchase upgrades from previous versions of windows. my wife's netbook with win 7 home starter provides just enough features to surf the web and check email. as far as home networking, it has been a painfuly disapointing experience. every computer on my home network can access shares (wired or wifi) except the netbook (wired or wifi) its interesting that some people have reported that devices "slowly disapeared" after an update.

Yes, It was real funny how initially every other machine was there, and it would stream dvr-ms across the network, and then suddenly it wouldn't. I find using vlc media player gets around most streaming issues, as this will allow streaming across the network on the netbook, but Win Media Player won't. I still cannot get my XP machine to network adequately. Sometimes it will appear on the network, and then it will disappear after a few minutes and I can't get it back. It seems pretty clear that it is a software permissions issue.

Hi Everyone, I know this thread hasn't had activity in some time, but I found myself having very similar issues once I purchased my Dell Mini 1012 with Win 7 Starter. Needless to say I was very disappointed with the limited capabilities. My home network consists of the following - Personal Desktop w/ Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP3 Personal Laptop w/Windows 7 Professional Netbook w/Windows 7 Starter First, I changed all the machines to MSHOME (the default workgroup for Windows XP) so they would all be in the same group and that worked fine. Then I was able to access my Win XP desktop from the Win 7 Starter netbook and vice versa. Subsequently, Win 7 Professional had issues with disconnecting from the router frequently so I changed my wireless security from WEP to WPA2 with TKIP on my Trendnet Super G Router. This caused many more connectivity problems for the machines running Windows 7 Pro and Starter. The Win XP computer is hard wired into the router so there was no issue there. Essentially both Win 7 machines had difficulty connecting, and once it did, it would not be able to hold the connection consistently. The Win 7 Starter Netbook was able to see the Win 7 Pro machine and connect to it, and the Win 7 Pro machine would see the netbook and Win XP comp. but couldn't connect to the Win 7 Starter netbook. The netbook also no longer saw the Win XP Machine. I tried what I could because obviously after changing my router security, that changed my networking access. I thought perhaps McAfee was the culprit on the netbook, made some changes there to no avail. So I addressed my router security issue. I changed the WPA2 security from TKIP to AES and now, all computers can see eachother and share everything! So perhaps if some of you are having issues with wired vs wireless devices, just try changing some of your router securities. I know I had a different problem than some of you that brought me to this result, but it's worth trying to see if it helps. Also, I don't have my updates automatically install which maybe has helped as well. I can't say they will stay visible after I install some of the updates but after much struggling, this is my final result to get all these working together, especially with Win 7 starter.

I was having similar problems sharing files between my wireless Win7 Netbook and wired Vista Desktop. It worked fine until I changed from WPA to WPA2, then the sharing went dark. Changing back to WPA fixed my problem. It seems to be a routing issue.

In my experience sharing of network resources is ONLY reliable if the following conditions are all met. All machines are in the same workgroup (already noted above) A matching account name on both the machines is required All accounts must have a non blank password set. Regards Mike
