Windows 7 Starter PPTP VPN Issue
Hello there, I have W7 starter machine at my home and I want to connect to company's network over VPN connection. The pptp connection can be established without any problems. After it's being connected, I cant get access to shared folders. Company's network consists of windows 2003 servers as well as XP user machines. Before I bought W7 starter, I had XP and everything worked fine... However, all that I tried did not get any results. Than I installed VMWare for W7 and XP in it. From my virtual XP machine i get the full commodity of VPN experience. Any ideas?

Windows 7 Home or Starter editions can not join a domain. Is that the case you have at work, ie. your trying to log into a domain?http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/domain-joinMS-MVP Windows Desktop Experience, "When all else fails, read the instructions"

I forgot to mention, we have workgroup. I also forgot to mention that after I'm being authenticated with VPN server on ISA2006 server, I'm able to start mapping network share with different credentials, but after a while, i receive a message that network destination can not be reached. Also, when I try to connect to some LAN machine via UltraVNC, I am being asked for password. When I'm authenticated, all I get is black screen within UltraVNC session. This is not the case when I'm in LAN with W7. In that situation everything works just perfect. I need to say again that when I start VPN connecton from my virtual XP, I do not get these issues. Hi, I would like to confirm the following questions first 1. Is the resource you want to access shared on the Windows Server 2003 machines or on the Windows XP machines? 2. Are the Windows Server 2003 machines or the Windows XP machines in a domain? 3. What are the error messages in detail? You may check the following link for more information about Windows XP cannot be mapped. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 For more information about the networking in Windows 7 Starter, you may refer to the following link. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Networking-in-Windows-7-Starter Arthur Li - MSFT

There are several shared folders on servers 2. Server and XP's are in the workgroup 3. After I'm authenticated with VPN server, I start mapping shared folder with different account. Authentications passes fine. Blank explorer window pops out (and there should be visible contents of shared folder). After some time the message appears that says something like share can not be mapped because it already exists. I doublechecked that there are no mapped network drives before making this operation. Somehow VNC worked. I have UltraVNC on my side and RealVNC on server's. It's somewhat slow, but I can say that it is fast enough for me to do some jobs on servers. I need to state the following: When I bring my laptop to my LAN, I experience non of the above problems.

When I bring my laptop to my LAN, I experience non of the above problems. Hi Stefan, Do you mean that this issue only occurs with the WLAN? I am glad to hear that you use UltraVNC as a workaround. In addition, I need the detailed error message to search from our knowledge base. Please paste the screenshot of the error message in your post for our further analyzing. For detailed steps on how to upload files with SkyDrive, please refer to: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65 Screenshot of the symptom ======================== 1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2. Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Arthur Li - MSFT

According to the error message, I find the following knowledge base article. If the network resource you want to access is on a Windows XP client, please try to remove the existing network mapping and create a new one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890413 Good luck!Arthur Li - MSFT

Solved this problem. Partly the problem was with the Internet provider and partly with W7 starter. Changed the provider and upgraded to W7 Pro. Also Installed my old XP in dual boot mode (just in case).
