Windows 7 Starter Edition - password expiry
Hi, I want users to log onto Windows 7 Starter edition without a password. All fine for 60 days, then a password change was enforced. I can select "remove password" from within User Accounts, but control userpasswords2 isn't available in Starter edition to then uncheck the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option. Is there a registry key I can edit to disable this? thanks

I am not sure if it's an option in the Starter edition, that edition is really limited in functionality and management options. But if it is, you could set the Password Age limit to 0 (password never expires) so that it wont enforce a user to change their password. Take a look at the local security policy related to logons and password age requirements.Go to Run > gpedit.msc Then go the path Comptuer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Password Policy Review the setting for Maximum Password Age and modify to 0 days..

thanks sadly gpedit.msc is not available in W7 Starter. I've tried searching registry for PasswordAgeLimit, but no luck. Any other pointers gratefully received.

Hi, please try to perform these following steps: 1 Right click “Computer” and click “Manage” 2 Click “Local Users and Groups” and click Users 3 Right click the user which you have set and choose “Properties” 4 Add the option “Password never expires” Another way you can try to edit registry” 1 Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE_MicrosoftWindows Nt_CurrentVersion_Winlogon 2 Set the value data of “AutoAdminLogon” as 1 3 Set the value data of “DefaultUserName” as the username you have set. (example: set the value as “Peter”, which is set as a user from your PC) 4 Create a new String Value, rename it to “DefaultPassword” and set the value date as the password of user. (example: user “Peter” password is “123”, then set the value of DefaultPassword to 123) Note: You should backup the registry before you want to change it. Hope it helps. Hi Option 1: 1 Right click “Computer” and click “Manage” 2 Click “Local Users and Groups” and click Users 3 Right click the user which you have set and choose “Properties” 4 Add the option “Password never expires” Sadly doesn't work as that option isn't available in Windows 7 Starter. Option 2: looks good and the netbook boots and auto logs in as the designated user. (Thank you Leo Huang) My question now is how/why has this user account (that previously had a blank password) requesting a password change, and if I deploy the registry fix above, will I have the same issue again in 60 days time...

There is a default policy in Windows 7 of password. As Windows 7 Starter doesn’t support gpedit, the note of password change will appear again after 60 days. I suggest updating your Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium, because Windows 7 Starter has the fewest features of the Windows 7 editions. Had this same problem... Found the fix for it. 1. Run CMD as an Administrator ( Click Start button, type CMD then Right click on CMD.exe and Run as Administrator ) 2. In CMD type ' net accounts /MaxPWAge:Unlimited ' 3. Hit Enter and you should see a line of text that says 'The command completed sucessfully.' You now have a Windows 7 Starter user account with no password experation.

Turn off Password Expiration in Windows 7 | Do not have to worry about Windows 7 Password Expiration Notification I found it annoying when Windows 7 one day told me that my User password was about to expire. Is there a quick easy way to disable Windows 7 Password Expiration? Reset Windows Administrator Password
