Windows 7 Sound Acts Muted
I have an HP Pavillion that's running Windows 7 Ultimate hooked up to a Mitsubishi television via DVI and audio cables. The video comes through fine, but the I get no volume. I'm thinking that the computer might be the source of the problem because it recognizes
that the rear speaker input is in use, and I see a volume bar that reacts to what is playing if I go to Playback Devices, but the volume bar in the system tray never shows any activity. I've opened volume mixer and made sure nothing is muted, and noticed that
I don't get that blue bar that pings when you change the volume. I checked HP's site and they don't have Win7 drivers for the machine so I used Windows Update to install the latest driver it could find and the issue still persists. Is there something else
I should be looking at or some other form of troubleshooting to try?
Thank you!

Try going into the mixer and see what you have set as the default sound device.

1. Use HDMI cable, if your computer is equipted with this connector. (Not confirm info is saying that DVI2HDMI adapter can be used.)
2. Troubleshooting audio in W 7 is described here

3. Are you sure that the TV is configured properly?

Hi,
Addition to the above suggestions, please capture a screenshot of your Playback device and let us know the model of your sound card.
Thanks.

Sorry about the delay. I work IT at a retirement community so I'm still trying to schedule another visit with the resident. I'll make sure to update this as soon as I can make another visit.

Alright, I managed to get the issue fixed today. The driver I had downloaded from realtek to replace whatever was there before didn't work, so I went back to HP's site and downloaded the Vista version of the driver (they don't provide Win7 drivers for
that model). After this, I ran the executable and copied the extracted files to the desktop. I then manually updated the sound driver to the Vista version and when I rebooted the machine recognized that the audio input was in use and began playing through
the tv. Thank you all for your suggestions on what to look for.
