Windows 7 Slow logon and Shutdown when on Domain
Hi,Our windows 7 Professional 32bit machines are slow to logon to the domain but are ok when we log in locally. When logging into the domain it pauses as the Welcome screen for about 30seconds. Shutdown also seems to go from the log off screen quickly but then pauses on the shutdown screen for about 20seconds.A new profile does not seem to help nor does disabling all non microsoft things on startup and our desktop background is set to a picture.NB: XP Professional logs in quickly to the same domain. What do we need to do to fix this?

That usually indicates a problem with DNS. Are the Win 7 clients set to use a DC as primary DNS server and no secondary address specified?Bill

Thanks for the reply Bill. Our clients are set to use a different 2003 DC & for primary and secondary DNS lan settings. We have recently added a 2008R2 DC, the Win7 clients were added after this, although the XP Pro machines were working before and after the addition of the 2008 DC. Both XP and Win7 clients are using the 2 2003 DCs for DNS. Have not yet tried pointing to the 2008 box for DNS but the role was installed when we promoted the 2008 server.

Hi, Please also try the following steps. 1. Go to Start, type Group Policy in the Search Box and then click Edit group policy. 2. Expand the following item from the left pane: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon 3. Double click "Always wait for network at computer startup and logon" setting on the right pane, choose Disable and then click OK. Exit Group Policy Editor and check the result. If the issue persists, I suggest you perform a Clean Boot for a test. Thanks, Novak

Hi i'we got the same problem. When logging on from windows 7 clients to domain (windows 2003) and logging off it pauses the screen for a very long time. The solution for my problem was as follow: On my XP prof clients it was no problem, because it uses UDP port 88 during logon to the windows 2003 domain controller. I experienced that windows 7 uses TCP port 88 (Kerberos) during logon, so I opened for that traffic in the software firewall on my windows 2003 domain controller, and after that the logon and logoff were very quickly.
