Windows 7 Security Center Service automatically disables/will not stay running
For the majority of the last week, I noticed, and have been trying to fix it, an Action Center message stating that I needed to turn on Windows Security Center Service on. I followed the usual steps of typing "services.msc" into the search bar and running the program as administrator. I found the appropriate service, double clicked it, and changed it's Startup type from "Disabled" to "Automatic" and ATTEMPTED to reboot the machine. Before I could even get the Services box closed, it had automatically changed from Automatic to Disabled. Being the security minded individual that I was, I dutifully rebooted my computer and it didn't appear...immediately. Just like a bad penny, it turned up again...Security Center service needed to restart. The only error message I received was that the Service could not be started. At first, I thought it was only an issue with Security Center service, but little did I know that my browsers (FireFox and IE8) were about to become hijacked. The story continues... I researched the problem here and found that there were many people who have been having similar problems, where the service wouldn't start, and even a few that had the same problem that I had - where it would automatically disable before getting the chance to reboot. So I went out and got Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Avast Anti-Virus, a program from Microsoft (download name was msert.exe) that will remain in system for 10 days, and even run the malicious software removal tool in Windows 7. Oh, I also scanned entire system with Avast, as well as McAffee, and only received two Trojan hits, both of which were sent to "quarantine" in their respective programs. I tried deleting the Repository folder from C:\Windows\System32\wbem, as mentioned in a reply to the same situation I'm experiencing. It worked the first time, but when the hijacks reappeared, the Repository folder, which was rebuilt after being deleted, now shows up with a lock on it and it can't be deleted. To make this long story short...I have tried just about everything short of a clean install in order to resolve this situation. I have run virus/malware scan after scan, I have even tried adjusting the Startup type between "Automatic, Automatic (delayed start), and Manual" in order to get the service started, but NOTHING has changed the fact that the service, at random intervals, AUTOMATICALLY disables. I'm tired of following "...try this and see if it works..." ideas. I just want the service to remain started and not automatically disable. Please help!Don't blame me...I'm just the driver!

ALAS!!! The problem seemingly has been corrected. Something told me to run another Spybot S&D after running ANOTHER Spybot S&D in Safe Mode. While in safe mode, I did the usual Malwarebites and Avast scan, then the Spybot scan. The Spybot scan returned something it found in my Registry that wasn't picked up by anyone else. I corrected it, rebooted per instructios, and behold, it was STILL THERE!!! I ran Spybot like my 'inner voice' was telling me, and after one week, it appears the problem has been taken care of. So if anyone else reads this... Download SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY!!!! Run it in Safe Mode (F8 after rebooting until you get the choices showing), and I chose 'with network support' so I could go to the internet if I had to. Follow Spybot's directions when installing and scan once in Safe Mode, then reboot and it'll scan again upon reboot. Alas, Sir Malware, you fought gallantly! PaulDon't blame me...I'm just the driver!

I had the same exact problem with the Security Center automatic disabling issue on my XP Home Premium SP3 Dell tower. I too ran complete Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware scans and cleaned everything found BUT the problem persisted. ALAS the fix!!! After 2 days of Googling and trying HijackThis and SpyBot here is what worked for me... You need to first download and install Microsoft Security Essentials and then download the latest MSE updates file separately becauase the virus does NOT allow the updates to MSE to be applied otherwise. In fact, this driver virus will NOT even allow MSE to start!! Once you have the updates applied reboot into Safe Mode and log into the Administrator account (God Mode!!). Then run an MSE scan and it will find and clean-up the bad drivers. The reason all the other tools do NOT work is because the virus is disguised as a Microsoft driver which gets loaded on boot-up BUT MSE is able to detect and clean that!! Once clean in Safe Mode reboot into normal mode and keep running MSE scans until you get a clean scan. Problem solved!!! ALAS Sir Malmare!!! You fought valiantly but revenge is SWEET!!!
