Windows 7 Search Indexing Redirected Documents folder on Network
Hi My company implements Folder Redirection of the "Documents" folder to a network share for each user. Our laptops are configured to automatically make redirected files available offline (default settting), however for our desktop computers we disable offline files via GPO, as there seems no reason to copy the users "Documents" content locally when desktops are always on a fast network. With the desktop configuration described above we are effectively tricking Windows 7 to think that a network drive is actually a local data directory, so I assume that when a user logs in my network file servers could be getting a hammering as Windows 7 Search builds the search index for "Documents"? Does anyone know or have experience of this, and what impact it may have on our network and file servers? I assume Microsoft will state that any network/server performance can be eliminated by enabling automatic offline files for desktops, however we are concerned about large data transfers and local copies of data when users log in to shared computers etc. Kind regards Rich
