Windows 7 Search (For Servers)
I have been using Windows 7 for a while now and noticed that I am unable to search my server shares with the builtin search funtionality. The indexed search works great on my local workstation but when I need to go out to a network file share to locate something I dont even have the option to select to search from a specific location. From what I have been able to find it appears that my only option is to add additional locations to be indexed on my workstation under the Index Options. Unfortunatley indexing my entire file server is not an option due to the amount of data residing on that and other servers. Does anyone know of a way around this? I need to be able to search on my servers without having to remote into them. I am not entirely opposed to indexing them if there is a more efficient way to do it than what I am thinking. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, As you would not like indexing, I suggest using a third party software Win7 Library Tool which can make it easy to add network locations.

I dont know if I am just using it incorrectly but this does not seem to resolve my issue. I need a simple way to allow all my users who are on Win 7 to quickly and simply search for files which are located on a network resource. Sorry for the delay in response, I was out of town... thanks!

Ok, I have figured out an option to resolve this problem...There is a FREE application called Agent Ransack which is a downloadable search application, similiar to the old XP search. This application will allow you to specify a network location and search it in the way you would expect it to search. The application can be downloaded at:http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/Unfortunatley I have been unable to get the builtin Windows search functions to do this for me... but this will work in the meantime.
