Windows 7 Search
Hi, A couple of questions about Windows 7 Search in the Start Menu 1. Are we able to have the search bar on the task bar like in Windows XP desktop search? If so, how? 2. Can we search mapped Network drives from this search bar? No.2 is fine in my internal network, I believe this is because Windows Server 2008 is allowing this. However, a client file server is using Windows Server 2003, and their Windows 7 workstations will not search the network drives. Please advise. Regards, James

Hi James, Here are the answers. 1. Are we able to have the search bar on the task bar like in Windows XP desktop search? If so, how? It is not possible. 2. Can we search mapped Network drives from this search bar? It only works the mapped drives are available offline. Understanding offline filesArthur Xie - MSFT

James - Odd.. I'm able to search my two network drives on my Windows 2000 Server. No problems. I click the drive in Explorer, I'm taken to the root of the drive and I type in the search criteria in the box in the upper right. Blam. It goes on a hunt and finds the files in question. Yes.. I know. Windows 2K is old news, but if it works ok with that, it SHOULD work the same way with Server 2003. Arthur - My mapped drives are simply mapped drives. They're not available offline. Up until I got around to installing the RTM version of Windows 7, I didn't even have the space required for making them offline (I installed the RTM on a 1 TB drive - space is no longer an issue). But I'm STILL able to search without any issues. I have a simple domain controller running Windows 2000 Server. AD and DNS services are both enabled and running on the machine. I have 2 drives mapped after I joined the domain. I have the two mapped drives reconnect at log on and I'm free to search using the method outlined above. Works like a charm. Maybe this is something specific to Windows 2003 Server?
