Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit) connecting to a TCP/IP port connected HP LaserJet 4 printer.
I have a laptop that is directly connected to a HP LaserJet 4 Printer via ethernet. I am trying to add the printer as a local tcp/ip port printer to my system. Ethernet on laptop: 192.168.1.29/24; Ethernet on Printer: 192.168.1.19/24 arp is showing that they discover each other. I cannot find the printer in the list of devices, and tried to use Windows Update many times and always fail. I have visited the <h t t p : / / catalog. update. microsoft. com> site and searched for the printer and downloaded the drivers. I extracted the contents of the CAB file and tried pointing the printer driver installation to the INF file. It finds the printer, and when I try to install the driver it errors out with the following error: unable to install hp laserjet 4, type 3 - user mode, x64 Operation could not be completed error 0x00000002. I tried to configure the printer using HP Universal Printer drivers for PCL5, 6 and PS. The printer configures, but when I try to print anything, i see the following error printed out on the printer and nothing else: ERROR: invalidfont OFFENDING COMMAND: xshow STACK: [245 75 136 136 136 196 0 ] ( ) Any help in resolving this would be immensly appreciated. Thanks Mahadev

Hi, I suggest you try the following to check the result: 1. Test the issue with another computer. 2. Check if you have installed the correct driver. 3. Check if Print Spooler Service is Started. 4. Run Printer troubleshooter and see how it works. More information: Troubleshoot network printer problems Also, you can refer to this similar thread: Win7 Printer Problems 0x0000007b and 0x00000002. Vincent, I am sorry not to have gotten back to you.. but no, this is not resolved yet. I have been helping my wife migrate from an older laptop (running the exact same set up, except of the hw differences), where the printer works. I am unable to re-acquire the HP LaserJet 4 printer drivers. HP does not publish them, and the Windows update menchanism for the download does not seem to work. (I get a failed to get updates, tray later message). I will try what you say above,, but I think I already did all those steps.. The Print Spooler is working, the job is getting to the printer, except its not printing the documents.. Please check the message above for the error that is getting printed out. Regards, Mahadev
