Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection to Windows 2003 terminal server
Howdy,
we have a windows 7 Professional Desktop connectiong to a terminal server 2003 sp2 which is part of a SBS 2003 environment. The RDC is made but the session is very sluggish; other XP clients using RDP are oK. The PC behaves when not using the RDP; Browses
the network OK, moves, adds & changes to files from network share OK;
Is this something to do with the RDP client version used by windows 7 or is there a patch required on the Terminal Server?
THanks in Advance
Peter

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
I understand that you encounters a delay while RDP from Windows 7 to Windows Server 2003. Based on my experience, this issue could be caused by the new
TCP Auto Tuning feature include in Windows Vista and Windows 7 that uses a scaling factor communication between the server and client to negotiate a bigger window
size during connection of the tow peers.
Some networking devices, such as SPI firewalls, some NAT routers, VPN endpoints, WiFi devices have problems with the way Windows Vista and Windows 7 resizes
the TCP Window.
These devices may block packet flow because they do not correctly interpret the scaling factor used in TCP connection. Please visit the following KB which
describes the similar situation:
A Windows Server 2003-based computer responds slowly to RDP connections or to
SMB connections that are made from a Windows Vista-based computer
As a work around, you could try disable the TCP Auto Tuning feature to see if the issue persists. To disable TCP Auto Tuning feature, please run the following
command in elevated privileges.
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
To verify that it is disabled type:
netsh interface tcp show global
BTW, as the issue is related to Windows Server 2003, please post in
Windows Server forums for support as well.
