Windows 7 Randomly Requiring to login twice
Hi -We have a Windows 7 Professional (x86) machine in a Domain Environment which will randomly require the user to enter their login password twice before giving them the desktop.1. Use System All Day2. Log Off at End of Day3. Next Morning - Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, Enter Password and then login screen comes back around again. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again, enter password again, and he is able to log in. This behavior is very random. No password incorrect messages are given or any messages for that matter.Has anyone seen this behavior or have any suggestions as to the cause ? The system is new, and Spyware free etc.

Hello,Does the problem happen when using any domain user accounts? This behavior may happens if the client machine has problems to communicate with the DC. Make sure the machine is in a reliable network environment. Try to re-join the machine to domain. If the problem still happens, boot the computer to clean boot mode and see if the problem is caused by certain startup prorgams or services. You can also reinstall windows 7 to exclude any possible cause for this problem. We are having the same issue with a couple of our systems (including mine). We are running Windows 7,Pro, 64 bit. These systems are using the Asus P6T WS main board, Intel i7 920 processors and 6GB of RAM. Not an urgent need, but it is becoming annoying!

I have this same issue. Although I've had Win7 running for months. This just started a few weeks ago. Spyware/Malware scan performed with no issue.

I've been having this for a while now too. Windows 7 Pro x86. Someone suggested to me that the issue could be in the power settings - as in one login for sign in and one log in to come out of sleep if the hard disks are off - but I have not investigated this further yet.

Hey Thanks. That fixed the random duel request for password at login. I don't know how this power setting got changed. I suspect however it may have been some security software I ran recently.

What exactly did you change ?

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options. Click "Require a password on wakeup". Under "Password Protection on Wakeup", click on "Change Setting That Are Currently Unavailable", select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done. Regards, Kenny

The only problem I see with that is of course that anyone could now have access to your computer after its gone to sleep. I'll have to test this but I wonder if a screen saver password would still be in effect after sleeping....

Actually it seems to work well after testing. I set my screen saver to come on after 5 minutes and require a password. I set sleep to happen after 10 minutes (5 minutes after locking with screen saver) but NOT require a password on wakeup. Then I waited about 12 minutes and hit the mouse/keyboard to wake up and it made me log in. This log in had to be from the screen saver so I think that did solve the problem. I'll find out for sure tomorrow morning since my double logon only happens once per day in the morning when I first log in to my machine for the day. Thanks all.

Thanks guys! I was getting seriously annoyed that I had to login to my computer twice every morning. I'm on a domain computer too, and it was the network login screen that would always come up twice. I never would have thought it was a password on wakeup setting local to the computer.

No one would happen to have a script to change this setting would they? If not guess Ill write it myself but I was hoping...lol

Heres what we came up with to use POWERCFG -DUPLICATESCHEME 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260aaaa POWERCFG -CHANGENAME 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260aaaa "PowerplanName" POWERCFG -SETACTIVE 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260aaaa POWERCFG -Change -monitor-timeout-ac 15 POWERCFG -CHANGE -monitor-timeout-dc 15 POWERCFG -CHANGE -disk-timeout-ac 120 POWERCFG -CHANGE -disk-timeout-dc 30 POWERCFG -CHANGE -standby-timeout-ac 90 POWERCFG -CHANGE -standby-timeout-dc 45 POWERCFG -CHANGE -hibernate-timeout-ac 120 POWERCFG -CHANGE -hibernate-timeout-dc 60 powercfg -SETACVALUEINDEX 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260aaaa SUB_NONE CONSOLELOCK 0 powercfg -SETDCVALUEINDEX 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260aaaa SUB_NONE CONSOLELOCK 0

Thanks... that solved the problem here to. However, I have not changed my power settings at all, and neither is it a member of a Domain. It is however member of a homegroup - not that I see any connection there. So it seems that Windows 7 takes this setting by default in my case.

Is it just me or does this seem like a software bug?

Thanks. This has been an annoyance in our environment too. I think the solution needs to go to hexrays.
June 12th, 2010 6:50am

I had hoped that changing the power options like what was described would have solved my problems. I think we have 2 differents problems with a similar description going on in this thread. Sadly, mine is the same as the very first post and I have to think it is a communication problem with the DC also. Now the fun part of figuring out why.....We had this problem with XP and now it's reared it's ugly head again in 7.

So far.... it's resolved my issues.... So far... I'll post back if something changes. I think there is a group policy for this setting though i haven't looked.

Had the same problem on a Small Business Server 2008 box and this fixed it. I'm not in the habit of walking away without logging off, so the security risk is minimal. Thanks Kenny, you rock!

I have the sames issue as described above by tnken however my issue is consistently happening. This began occurring after an update and has continued for the last 3 weeks. I plan to get one of the IT guys to sign as another user and will follow up on this post. BillJ

The issue seems to be the Vista/Win 7 sleep mode. Turn off sleep or set the power option to high performance and the problems goes away.

This only kinda solves the issue for me. If I am logged in and hit the sleep button, then go to wake my PC backup, it does NOT ask for a password (it comes back right to my desktop). In that situation, I Do want it to ask for a password.
