Windows 7 RTM can't install SQL Server Developer Edition (??)
I had everything working on Windows 7 RC and with the RTM I had to do a clean installation on my 64bit laptop. I was able to install Office 2010, Visual Studio 2010 w/SQL 2008 Express. But, when I try to install the SQL Server 2008 Developer 64bit Edition (with UAC off) I get a "Invalid Handle ... exception". Then, I decide to downlaod the 64bit SSMS Advanced for SQL Express 2008 and I still can't get it to install.Anyone has an idea on how to fix this issue? Thanks,Max

Ok, This is what happened... When I installed RTM I wasn't connected on the internet. So, make sure you select to download the updates during the installation. I finally got SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition.Again, updates during installation is very IMPORTANT.Thanks,Max

What, apparently work for me, was to open Windows Updates, look if there's any update to download (because I wasn't connected during my RTM setup) then make sure you reboot your machine. Then, everything started to work OK. Just forgot, not sure if it matter BUT... get the product key and activate your OS.I hope this will help in any way. Some other tips: (Just in case) If the error still persist...download again the ISO (and/or *.exe) and rebuild your CD (if needed). Most of my headaches with Windows 7 was due to installing Betas and CTP's before doing my Windows Updates. During my RTM, this would prevent me to continue installing other software (Live Essentials, Acrobat Reader, Flash, TweetDeck) ... it was crazy. Please, feel free to give me some feed back on what's your status.Good Luck,MaxPS... Windows 7 truely ROCKS!!

I haven't personally tried it yet on my Win7 x64 RTM install but SQL Server 2008 with sp1 slipstreamed is supposed to be the way to go? http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2009/05/14/installing-sql-server-express-on-windows-7-release-candidate.aspx

Although, I never had a problem installing SQL Server 2008 in Wint RC, it did surprise me with RTM. One thing I forgot to mention was that I install Visual Studio 2010 (w/SQL 2K8 Express) and then I install an instance of SQL 2K8 64bit.Maybe this is why I was able to complete the installation.:)

Okay I finally got around to intalling SQL Server 2008 on Win7 x64 RTM again and yup I get the "Invalid Handle ... exception" when trying to install it. I got it to install by explicitly right clicking the setup program and running as administator. Must be a permissions problem they fixed in SQL Server 2008 SP1. Actually, you don't have to run as administrator since this post says it's a known error and running the setup a 2nd time will make the error go away: http://blogs.msdn.com/petersad/archive/2009/08/14/invoke-or-begininvoke-cannot-be-called-on-a-control-until-the-window-handle-has-been-created.aspx Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. We have been hearing that customers installing SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 August CTP are hitting the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. This issue is occurring due to .NET behavior on Win7 change that is exposing a bug in how we close UI dialogs. Generally, if you just rerun it won't hit the issue again.

I got this error when trying to install SQL express SP1. The install apparently wasnt happy with my version, but when I downloaded the FULL SQL 2008 SP1 through Windows update the error went away. (I had to click the button to scan for additional products, not just Windows)

Hi guys, I got this error when intalling SQL Server 2008 SP1 on a SQL Server 2008 developer edition and Win7. I was able to solve it by right clicking on the setup file and select "Run as Administrator". Cheers.
