Windows 7 RTM Backup & Restore not working, backups missing (maybe?)
Here is the behaviour I'm seeing: In the Backup and Restore applet, I get three very different explanations of my backup situation (all of my backups are on one drive, which is currently plugged in, turned on, and visible to the operating system): 1. Last backup time: 11/08/2009 7:15PM 2. Most recent backup on drive: 08/08/2009 9:21PM 3. Restore: "There are no backups saved on the current backup location. You can restore files from another location." Running the restore application from the Windows 7 disk shows me: 1. My last Vista backup on that disk, which is not visible from inside Windows On this backup disk, I actually have: 1. Four Windows 7 backups from my desktop made in the last week 2. One Windows 7 backup from my laptop made in the past week 3. Two Vista backups made a few months ago So I suppose my questions are... - Why is manual restore mode only seeing one backup (and why is it seeing a Vista backup and none of the 7 backups)? - Why is the information in the Backup and Restore applet so inconsistent (ie, why is it telling me that it can see the backup from 08/08, but it can't find anything to restore)? - Is there any way to force it to restore one of the backups that I know is there? - Is this a bug? If so, where can I submit it?

According to your description, please clarify the below things: 1, Did you modify the backup file name or type after backing up successfully? 2, Did you change the extension of the backup files after backing up successfully? After testing in my side, I found that if we change the backup file name, the backup and restore center can only see part of the backup files. But the other backup files still can be used for restore by double clicking on the backup files directly. After double clicking on the backup files directly, which the files name are modified, the restore point still can be found in these files, we can use these restore point also. So, this is not a bug. I hope the above explanation can answer your questions.

Windows 7 "Backup and Restore" will use Computer name as backup file name, and backup data in this file will visible in Backup and Restore. So, backup file from another PC(or the Computer name has been changed) will not be automatically listed in Backup and Restore. It will cause a There are no backups saved error if you click Restore my files. You can try to double click the restore file from Windows Explorer to launch the Windows Backup feature manually. I think it worth a try.

After testing this issue in our environment, this behavior is below: In the Backup and Restore applet, we can see backup files, these backup files are backup for the current running computer. The other backup files for different computer cannot see in the Backup and Restore applet. Regarding the error message There are no backups saved on the current backup location. You can restore files from another location, this issue may be caused by the below three aspects: a, The backup files name was changed b, The computer name was changed c, The current log on user is not the original user. But the backup files were created by the original user. Running the restore application from the Windows 7 disk can only show the full system image backup for the whole Operating System. The other backup for some files or folder cannot show in the restore application from the Windows 7 disk. Now, the questions answer are below: 1, When running a manual restore mode, such as running restore application from the Windows 7 disk only show Vista backup on the disk, it means that there is only the last Windows Vista backup is a full system image back up for whole Operating System. The other backup files are for some special files or folders. When running a manual restore mode, the computer will accord to the backup type to choose the appropriate file to show. The inappropriate backup files will not show in the manual restore mode. For your convenience, please see the below webpage, you will see there are 5 ways of making a restore : Startup repair, System Restore, Windows complete PC restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and Command prompt. In Windows 7, the five ways still exists, but the Windows complete PC restore was changed to System Image Recovery. They have the same function. After running a manual restore mode by using Windows 7 disk, we can run the System Image Recovery by using the full system image. However, if there is only one full system image, it will only show this one on the computer. How to do a System restore in Windows Vista and Windows 7 http://www.technospot.net/blogs/how-to-do-a-system-restore-in-windows-vista-and-windows-7/ 2, On Windows 7 computer, we can only see the current Windows 7 backup files from the Backup and Restore applet and we cannot see the other backup files for Windows Vista. In addition, when doing the Windows 7 backup from the laptop, we can see the Windows 7 backup files for the laptop, and we cannot see the Windows 7 backup files for the Desktop. Windows 7 will automatic load backup files according the backup file recorded on this computer only, and that will avoid mis-restore from incorrect backup files. That is why the information in the Backup and Restore applet is so inconsistent. 3, There is a way to force it to restore one of the backups that we know is there. The way is double click on the backup files on the disk, we can see the whole Restore point and files, we can choose which file we want to restore. After restoring completely, it will remind us if we use the different restore files or different backup files on different computer. Additional, you can right click the backup file you would like to restore and select open to get into the folders and manually restore related files. 4, According to the above explanation, this is not a bug.

Hi Danny,The simple explanation is that Windows backup and restore control panelshows only those backups that have in the same machine (by same machine, I mean machine name)for restore by default. The other backups canbe browsed at "Select another backup to restore files from" Secondly, the restore application only lists file backups that have been taken. Can you check if your Windows 7 backup configuration includes files or only system image? Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]

Hey I'm having the same problem, but the backups are made on the same computer and not renamed. I can look in the backup tool 5 minutes after creating a backup and it still says there are none, but shows the last backup time.
