Windows 7 RTM 64bit poor web performance when connected to a 801.11n network
I have a freshly installed Windows 7 64bit RTM (downloaded from technet), no other software installed. I connect to a wifi-n network (Fritz!Box 7270) via a Intel 4965AGN networkcard. Now the network speed is great (3MB/s and up), even better than when I use this connection via my Windows Vista 64bit on the same hardware. But when I start Internet Explorer (32bit or 64bit) all webpages load extremely slow or not at all. Again on the Windows Vista installation (jammed with all sorts of software) all webpages load almost instantainiously but on Windows 7 some are slow taking atleast 30~60seconds to load, others do not load at all. The odd thing is that when I connect to my Wifi-g network which is wired via the Fritz!Box 7270 to the internet all webpages load quickly, almost instantainiously. I tried to use a number of older Intel 4965agn drivers, and the latest available for Vista 64bit but with no succes... all had the same result, great network performance but very poor webpage performance. Also I ruled out the possibility that it could be IE.... I downloaded Firefox which had the same problem. As an experiment I stopped all services that I beleive could interfere with loading webpages (e.g. Windows Firewall) without succes. I must be missing something here and could use some help with this.

Which anti-virus program are you using? Temporarily disable protection and test the page load with IE8. Also, check the connection settings in Internet Options of IE8to confirm that the auto detect settings is enabled under LAN.The drivers in Win 7 from Intel for the 4965 will work fine. Use those as they were provided to MS by Intel. Windows update will find newer if available. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Usually I use McAfee, but since I was testing right after installing Windows 7 I didn't install the anti-virus software yet. I've tried the autodetect setting enabled and disabled... no luck either way. I've even tried the RC1 version of Windows 7, and that one works perfecty on the wifi-n network. I'm just guessing here, but something must have changed in between the RC1 and the RTM regarding TCP port 80 which doesn't like my wifi-n network.

Oke, have some more info... It looks to be an issue with the Fritzbox 7270. When configuring the FritzBox to a wifi-g network the same problem occures. My other wifi-g network (linksys connected to the Fritzbox) is still working great. Anybody with a FritzBox 7270 experiencing the same problem? Just today I wrote an email to avm(fritzbox) support and are awaiting an answer from them.

Hi Robin Tol,I recently checked the downloads section at AVM and they have a Windows 7 firmware update for the Fritz Box 7270 here. Read the instructions for updating the firmware and apply the update. Have you tried that? Check your firmware version against this version.Report back with the result, please. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Hi Nano Warp, I've had the firmware you mention installed somewhere in February, but thanks for trying to help out. Yesterday after my Windows 7 install I tried a clean Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit with SP2 integrated on the same hardware, and again the same problem occurred... I think this is very strange. When I install Vista with or even without SP1 I have no troubles at all not even when later updating to SP2... all works fine. I just reverted back to an "old" Vista image (ultimate SP2 64bit) and everything works great again. I'm puzzled here.

Just had confirmation from AVM that the wireless chipset in the Fritzbox 7270 has been giving connection/throughput/web problems when connecting the, single most popular Draft-n wifi networkcard in the world, Intel 4965AGN. They suggested to upgrade the Intel driver... unfortunatly this doesn't solve my problem. I'm thinking of giving up and buy a Sitecom gaming router (WL-308) to replace the Fritzbox.

Hi Robin Tol,Sorry to hear that news from AVM. The other issue is that Wireless N is still in development (Draft 2.0). The WL-308 looks a little complex with all of the configuration options that it offers. It may be a bear to manage. I could see from the datasheet that the WL-308 seems to be designed for throughput. The Fritz Box 7270 seems more mainstream with wireless-N added. It probably works great in N with the usb dongle they sell. (engineered together, hence the issue with the Intel 4965)I run a wired gigabit network and had an unmanaged switch that Vista didn't like. So, in conclusion, it was network hardware and not Win 7 or drivers thatis causingthe issue. Let's close this thread. Why not mark your last post as the answer?I have enjoyed working with you. Good Luck! The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Hi Nano Warp, No worries, I'm still not sure what to do... buying a new router or waiting for the next firmware update for the 7270 which they mentioned is nearing completion, the USB dongle might be a good solution although the fact that I have to use an external device while there is an internal one available with the same capabilities will hurt my feelings. ;-) Not sure how to close the thread, if anybody can tell me how or just close it please do. Thanks for the great help.
