Windows 7 RDP will not connect, Windows XP will
I have been using RDP for years without any issues. Recently I needed to connect via RDP to a server on the Internet. I get the Error Message Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of the following reasons, etc. I have a laptop with Windows XP - works fine. Connect via IP address, boom right there. Now this would to me rule out network issues/firewall issues. I've checked and rechecked Windows Firewall and it is allowing Remote Descktop. I even tried adding Remote Desktop32, and nothing. I've gone so far as to turn off the windows firewall - nope that didn't do it. I can PING the remote host no problem are tracert to it to. I've also tried logging in with a different user account. Any ideas? All The Best !!!

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to verify the error message when you RDP form Windows 7 to Server. You can make a screenshot and Upload to SkyDrive. I suggest to perform these test to troubleshoot the issue: 1 login with Clean Boot 2 Make sure the “Remote Desktop Services” are started in Services 3 Disable IPv6 Furthermore, you can follow this article to troubleshoot RDP issue: Why can’t I connect using Remote Desktop Connection? Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Mr. Huang, thanks for the reply. I've powered down and powered back up my PC. Remote Desktop Services are running on my local pc. <-- My PC IPV6 Is Not Installed <-- My PC and Finally the error - note I can ping the machine. I assure you I can connect from this Network with RDP on a Windows XP SP3 machine. Feel free to reply, or anyone else for that matter. This is driving me up a wall. All The Best !!!

Hi, Thanks for your update. What version of Serve did you use? After checking the error message, I provide you some other tests you can try: 1 Temporally disable firewall on Windows 7. 2 Turn on network discovery in Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing setting 3 Use PC name instead of IP address to remote 4 Register DNS via command: ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns Hope that helps. That’s strange. Could Windows 7 RDP with other client or server? Maybe the mstsc.exe component was broken on Windows 7. Further, please check "Limit number of connections" policy on Server to see if you set the maximum number of connections.
