Windows 7 RDP
I had been connecting with the RDP client fine for months on Windows 7 RC x32, both on my network and in other locations. However, a few weeks ago it just stopped connecting. With a Windows XP computer the same connection still works, so I know it is a problem with the RDP client on the Windows 7 machine. It can ping the computer fine, but when I hit the "connect" button on the remote desktop dialogue, it says "securing remote connection," asks me for credentials, which it enters, then it says "configuring" and right when it used to load the RDP window, the connection progress bar just disappears and it brings me back to the main screen. If I mis-enter my credentials, then it tells me that I did, which means that it must be making some connection with the machine that I want to connect to. This happens on my LAN and from other locations, and it also happens without a Firewall turned on. What could be causing this problem? I am trying to connect to a Vista Ultimate x64 machine

Hi, Thanks for posting here. Before we go further, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the following questions: 1. Would you please let me know when the issue began to occur? Have any new programs or updates installed on the Windows 7 computer? 2. Do the computers connect via a Router or Switch? Are they in a Workgroup or a domain? To troubleshoot the issue, I suggest we perform the following steps. 1. Run Remote Desktop in administrator privilege. ========================= By default, the remote desktop connection runs as a user with the lowest user permissions. By default, a restricted user does not have permission to write registry entries to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Therefore, attempts to rewrite the MSLicensing key may fail. To resolve this issue, we need to run the RDP client software as administrator: a. Click Stat, type: MSTSC in the Start Search bar and then right click on the "MSTSC" in the result list->select "Run as Administrator". Click Continue if it prompts. b. Type the target computer address and then click Connect to test the issue again. NOTE: For the troubleshooting purpose, please temporarily disable Firewall and third party antivirus program when establishing the RDP connection. You can re-enable it once we complete the troubleshooting steps. Can we connect to the target computer now? 2. Please turn on the Windows 7 machine and connect another target computer via Remote Desktop. 3. Open Remote Desktop window, click Options and ensure Allow me to save credentials has been unchecked. Switch to Advanced tab, select Connect and dont warn me in Server authentication and then reconnect to see how it works. 4. Assure that the Remote Desktop Service is started. ========================= a. Click "Start", go to run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and press Enter. Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. b. Right click the "Remote Desktop" service and choose Properties. c. On General tab click Start. d. Choose Automatic next to Startup type and click OK. 5. Please test the issue in Clean Boot. ========================= a. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. b. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). c. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". d. Restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. If the issue still occurs, please post the following log for research. RAS Logs ======= Note: The logs need to be collected before you start the connection setup. Execute the following from elevated command prompt on the problematic computer 1. Click Start, type "cmd" in the search bar. The CMD icon will appear in the Start Menu. 2. Right click the CMD icon and click "Run as administrator". 3. In the popup window, type the following command and press enter. netsh ras diagnostics set rastracing * enabled 4. Please temporary do not close the CMD window and run Remote Desktop again. 5. If the issue persists, please type the following command and press enter in the CMD window. netsh ras diagnostics set rastracing * disabled 6. The trace logs are created and available at "C:\Windows\tracing" folder. 7. Open the log file and post the log here. Thanks, Novak
