Windows 7 RC security?
I am wondering if windows 7 Firewall and Defender are in working order or not? Freind of mine told me that they are not because 7 is in build stage is this true?

They are working fine, as far as I can tell, in both the RC and RTM.

What do you mean "he was hacked"? Defender is a poor AV, try to find something different.Hello! Windows Defender detects and removes spyware Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.Source :- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspxAnd about your friends account getting compromised, there can be many reasons behind this, which Browser was your friend using at the time of the incident ????

Windows Defender is not an Antivirus, make that clear. Let's make something clear: the "AV" term is used to describe any anti-virus program whether is is truly an AV suite or not. Do you have a suggestion for what to call AV apps that aren't a AV suite? Point is Windows Defender is very poor at detecting and removing viruses.Hello! I would say Windows Defender is an Anti-Spyware and it will detect malware/spyware which tries to alter your system startup, browser settings and for the same reason a it will not detect a huge number of viruses.i feel you are assuming that Windows defender is like a full fledge antivirus like Norton Antivirus or others...In my opinion windows defender does the job well for which it is meant for.....

i feel you are assuming that Windows defender is like a full fledge antivirus like Norton Antivirus or others... No I am not. It doesn't detect everything out there, doesn't have full protection scanners for e-mail, etc, or its own firewall, like a "big" AV app would have. It is just a simple scanner. So why would it limit itself to finding only viruses that will alter system startup, or browser settings? Most viruses will do something else with their payload! With this info, I sure am never recommending Windows Defender again! So let's review this again: The AV term is used loosely to include anti-spyware, malware, or other standalone, small, etc. scanners that aren't big AV sites.Hello! What I really wanted to know about 7 in general is about the Firewall. I have a good Anti-virus software I am running and just really want to know if windows Firewall is working. I really don't know who my friend spoke with on the issue of the security of 7 but he told me that the Tech told him it wasn't giving protection. I did read some other info on it and it seems to be working just as if it was bought. Is the Windows firewall working normally or is there a need to get my own software version of a firewall??

HiFor anti virus and spyware detection try Microsoft Security Essentials as its free and seems pretty good. I have also read in a review that it asa good detection rate. Please remember that there are no anti virus or anti spyware programs that are 100 per cent in the detection stakes.Windows firewall does work but does not stop outgoing traffic if there are no rules defined for it. The defaults are.Incoming traffic- if it is not defined in a ruleBLOCK it.Outgoing traffic- If it is not defined in a ruleALLOW it.You could make the outgoing rules more secure see my post elsewere on thisforum about windows 7 firewall. As the firewall stands any new program that wants to create an outgoing connection will be allowed to.It is very well locked on incoming connections though. I have tested it using grc shields up and its fully stealthed as long as its turned on.all the bestmalc
