Windows 7 RC freezing
Alright so I have the RC (64) installed and a small partition that has Vista Business (64) on my drives. The problem, obviously, lies with WIndows 7 though. It boots up just fine and works great, until I leave it alone for a while. I've no idea how long it takes for the system to lock up but I come back from being out and the cursor moves but everything else is frozen solid. I can't imagine what could be going on so some help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure I would agree that it is "obviously" Windows 7. I would suggest that it might be your video card driver. Have you installed the latest Windows 7 drivers from nvidia?

Thanks for providing your specs! This might be memory - do you OC? Kris

@ Lead3: That is an excellent point but only the Windows 7 install locks up, when I am in the Vista partition it runs fine for hours upon hours. Also, I am pretty fure that my driver is the latest, if it is not then I know for sure that it is one of the Win7 beta ones that NVIDIA has put out. DXDIAG says that I am running 8.15.11.8581 from 4/28/2009. @KrisM77: No problem about the specs, every forum should require the specs to be posted or at least in the sig. As for your question, no I do not overclock as I think that laptops have ahard enough time dealing with heat as it is and I feel no need to exacerbate the issue. UPDATE: So I changed my "Choose when to turn off the display" option to never turn off the display then I left for about 30min and she was still going fine. This probably doesn't help much, in fact I personally think it makes the problem even stranger. But if I want to get this fixed everyone needs to know exactly what is going on. Hi. Just wanting to add that I have the same problem -- my system intermittently freezes when going into sleep mode.I'm using the current Nvidia drivers 185.85 - running two 8800GT video cards driving 3 screens. Win7 RC x64.If it happens again I'm going to revert to my old standard - the 169.25 drivers and see if the problem goes away./jad

Hi COIf you are saying that this freezing only occurs after returning from sleep or other power option settings, such as turning off the monitor, hard drive, etc, this is a knownbugin Windows 7. This only occurs on certain systems.Bug reports have been filed, but no fixes have been implemented at this time.Hopefully, this will be fixed in the final build (RTM). It could also be fixed with an update that we will see before RTM.The only workaround, at the present time, is to not use these power options if this bugeffects your system. If you know you will be away from the system, for an extended amount of time, simply shut it down.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Thanks to all who replied to this thread, I have done some troubleshooting and found that I can go in and out of sleep just fine. But the issue arises when the monitor turns of and then comes back on after I move the mouse or what not. So I have just set my power options to never turn off the screen and all is well now. Though I can't change my screen brightness on the fly, I have to reboot for brightness changes to take effect but that is a system specific issue to my Asus as far as I know. Ok I have some imput to add aswell,I have been using 7 Beta 32 Bit for around 3 months and found it rock solid and a pleasure to use ( I think Microsoft has finally got it right). Received the email that the RC was being released and thought I best update to keep up with updates etc. I downloaded and installed the RC V7 somthing and installed and worked fine for about 3 days then the patches started and now I have the freezing issues aswell on RC 7100. Now this is not an issue with the power saving options I am having its just intermittent pauses some aslong as 30 secs some for 5 secs, it could be opening a program or typing or scrolling down a page. Last night whilst playing a game of warcraft the game appeared to freeze I had full mouse controll CTRL+ALT+DEL did not respond yet mouse was responding fine. Clicking on any program in the task bar requires patients of a saint because it can take upto 2 mins for a program to open and respond. I have rolled back video drivers to the WDM version as this is what I diagnosed as the problem but alas it has not fixed the issue. I did have my desktop on a rotation to change wall paper evey 5 mins noticed that when this happend there was a lag type affect that occured in the back ground and this also was apparent when browsing now typing this response after turning off the wall paper rotation off it seems to have settled a bit I havent yet restarted but I will report back after I have done the restart and see if things settle. From what I have read around other forums this appears to be a 64 bit issue and if memory serves me correctly I seem to recall XP64 had a similar issue aswell which appeared to be a driver that was causeing the problem.Heres my specs and softwareWIndows 7 RC 7100 64 bitGigabyte MA790X-UD42 Gig DDR2R4870 512mb WDDM 1.1 Ver 8.56.1.132 x 320 Gig Sata DrivesPhenom 9750 X4Office 2007 <----------------Problems sort of began after updates came through for office this could be a coincidence as there was security updates at the same time.Acrobat ReaderFirefoxPhotoshop CS3AVG Free AntivirusI will reprort back with further findings.Cheers Richard.

Two more cents on this subject:I noticed that the "Balanced" power saving scenario had both the monitors and the sleep occur at 30 minutes. I recalled that in Vista it would not let you set them both to be 30 -- and would force you to make the monitors off at 25 and the sleep at 30.So, I have manually set it to monitors off at 25 and sleep at 30 -- I'll see what happens, but so far so good./jim

Ok what ever is causing this issue its to do with memory. I enabled the cpu monitor and memory usage hovers around 45 % and cpu at 2-6 % when the problem happens the cpu usage goes upto 20-30% and the memory soars upto 96-98 % and stays there and as I am typing this the memory just shot right upto 100% and is slowly dropping again, its now hovering on 75% this is why things are lagging and appearing to freeze because all of your system memory is being used. Could other people please enable the monitor and see if their memory goes through the roof..Cheers

Never will norton cross my PC's path again :) My problem is solved Disabled the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and all is good, so there must be a problem there why the ____ does it use so much resources. When searching for soloutions to disable it Ive seen posts referring to media player 11 so there must be an issue that needs addressing especially using 80+ % of system memory thats worse than norton :)

1. Press Start type processes in the search box 2. click on View running processes with task manager 3. Make sure processes tab is selected and search through the running processes for Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service If its not in there then its not running. Its a delayed start so It may not happen when you boot. If you find all of a sudden your pc begins to lag bad then have a look and see if it has started. Hope this helps

I do use the network sharing service for streaming to my Xbox 360 so disabling it isn't an option here. I do hope they fix this though because except for this one bug Windows 7 RC is great. Since I do a lot of streaming this is kind of a show stopper for me. Damn that's a bad unintentional pun...
