Windows 7 RC Randomly Freezes for 2 minutes then Returns to Normal
Sorry if this is in the wrong place. About a week ago I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC 32 bit onto my Asus G1S. I really like it so far and other then a simple driver update from nvidia everything has been working well. With one exception. I have yet to figure out what triggers it but I'll be surfing the web using Firefox (fully updated) and normally listening to music on Winamp. After I click a link the page stops and I get the circular waiting mouse pointer. I hover all over the firefox page and nothing changes it's frozen, I click on the page and it fades slightly and says in the top left "Not Responding" If I hover over the different icons on the taskbar they seem to work. But if I try to open up the Documents folder, it will start to open, then freeze as well. My music will also stop sometimes. (haven't noticed consistency with that) Although if the music does freeze and I open winamp it loads fine. But if I click next song it will freeze. So basically everything in some way or another is frozen. About 1 to 2 minutes will go by and then everything will resume as if there was never a problem in the first place. If I tried to open a notepad document, that loads. The song changes. The website loads. everything continues as if nothing was wrong. It's really inconsistent too. I can't seem to figure out a common link. Sometimes it will happen 3 times in 20 minutes (which is extremely frustrating) Other times it will happen once or maybe never in 5 hours of time. Does anyone have any idea what is happening, or experienced similar problems? If you need more information just ask, I'll try to elaborate as much as possible. Thanks

Hi,Based on my test results, the Firefox is not fully compatible with Windows 7. You can use IE 8 instead of Firefox for some times and check if the issue persists. The incompatile device driver may also cause this problem. If the problem still occurs in Clean Boot mode, I recommnad you test the problem in Device Clean Boot mode: Device Clean Boot================1. Click "Start", type "DEVMGMT.MSC" in the Search textbox and press Enter. Please click Allow if the User Account Control window is prompted.2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your Sound Card, select "Properties"4. Click "Driver" tab, click Disable (Disable the selected device). Click OK.5. Please use the same method to disable other hardware: Modem, network adapter, CD-R drive. Then, restart your computer. Please check whether the issue persists. Click "Driver" tab, click Enable (Enable the selected device). Click OK.If the issue does not occur, we can re-enable the devices one by one to narrow down the root cause.Thomas Lin

Hi there! I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 32 bit onto the same kind of laptop (Asus G1S) and has the same identical problem. Sometimes when I watch a movie, the system hangs with a high disk I/O (100%) and after a minute or so it 'unhung' itself. The movie will then speed forward by the similar amount of time it's been frozen. But the peculiar thing is, the sound continues off from where it froze without speeding ahead. The freeze seem to happen even without firefox, and when i experimented playing the same movie over an external hard disk, the freeze doesn't happen again. The inconsistency of the hanging pattern really bugs me because I dread having to do a presentation on the laptop and it hangs mid-line. Regards.

Thanks so much, Thomas! After having this problem drive me NUTS for a week, I finally found this message board post, and disabling the sound card driver did the trick!

I spoke too soon; the problem continues. I have disabled every expendable device; I have uninstalled every program and update since the problem began, and it's still happening. I was running Win 7 RC1 on my computer for months, and it worked great. Now, three days after I installed the real version, it's started this. Does anyone have additional suggestions?

Here is what solved this plague for me: switching my power plan to High Performance. Unbelievable. This issue took the shine off Win7 quickly.

Hi there, i have the same problem too! Same Notebook ( AsusG1S ) and the same stories about freezing. I looked in the Event Manager and couldnt find something related to the HDD hung ups wich occur random .... when im playing this is really annoying. So if you switch your Power settings to High Performance the problem is gone? I'll give it a try. Others here who had the same solution or another to solve this freezes? Greetz

i had a very similar (if not the same) issue and was able to remedy this.some of you may want to try the following:you can first try to open the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and select "Start Task Manager", Task Manager can also beaccessed by right-clicking on a blank area of the bottom task bar. once you have Task Manager up and running, select the "Processes" tab and keep an eye on "dwm.exe", especially if you are able to when the system slows up. dwm.exe is the Desktop Windows Manager that adds some of the snaz to the desktop look and feel. if you see the memory usage for this go up...and up, chances are the below change will help you. mine went up dramatically from 15 megs to over 150 megs in a matter of a couple minutes, while i had only the Task Manager and IE open and i had not changed any of the default drivers or settings from the initial "fresh" install of W7 and no apps were added at the time.i corrected what seemed to be a memory leak from dwm.exe by:1. opening"Advanced System Settings" panel (Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings)2. select the "Settings" button under "Performance" (Visual effects, processor scheduling...)3. while on the "Visual Effects" tab, uncheck "Enable desktop composition"4. apply, OK.disabling desktop composition seems to only take away some of the transparency features, but for now, it seems a small price to pay...hope this is helpful to some.~Aj

I am having exactly the same problems that a couple of you have mentioned. It happens sometimes when using Firefox, VLC to watch movies, and even at other times when neither of those programs are running. The computer will freeze up with the Hard Drive light on solid and i can't do anything with the computer, after about a minute the hard drive light will turn off and everything starts working normally again. I have had the exact same problem with the windows 7 RC and now with windows 7 RTM. I don't remember this happening with the first Windows 7 Beta though... One unusual thing i've notices is that if you open up the Event Viewer and look at the Windows Logs > Security there's a new entries when it comes back from the freeze. This was copies right after one of the freezes: Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:43:29 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 4672 Special Logon Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:43:29 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 4624 Logon Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:42:58 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 5061 System Integrity Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:42:58 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 5058 Other System Events Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:42:58 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 5061 System Integrity Audit Success 11/3/2009 4:42:58 PM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 5058 Other System Events I'm not sure what to make of them but i hope someone can figure this out. It's extremely annoying!

I've found a workaround, which worked for me fine: change your power mode from 'balanced ' to 'high performance '. No more freezes for more than 2 weeks. I hope this will help you as well.

I have a very recent built PC specs are; ASUS P7P55D Pro | Intel i5 Quad core 750 | Gigabyte NVIDIA GTS250 | S.GSKILL Trident DDR3 16000CL9D-4GBTD I started getting these random hangs whether surfing the net, running a program or playing a game where the computer HDD light would go solid and hang for random times anywhere between 20seconds to a minute. I tested the ram passed with flying colors, I checked the HDD which is also fine, I was running Windows XP Pro GOLD, but now gave a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro and still getting the same mysterious freeze, but the weird thing is there is no error messages or anything anywhere. The mouse works, I can still move the mouse over some things and get the mouse over effect but i can't jump between program nor go to another page when browsing. and then it just goes back to normal and then randomly will do it again, I have almost tried EVERY option I can come up with and still no solution does anyone else hav this problem or has anyone had this problem and fixed it?? Cause honestly for the specs I have this comp should not even have a problem churning out tasks, I don't OC, or anything... SOMEONE PLEASE HELP...
