Windows 7 RC1 Bug Reports
So, I haven't found many yet, but I shall update this once I do. Screen goes blank after monitor sleep. I went AFK for a while and when I came back, I noticed my screen was blank - I hit enter, pressed mouse 1 tried everything, the screen was still blank. Not sure what happened, but it just died after it went into sleep mode (no screen saver was on, but turn of monitor after 10 minutes was) Doing an optional Windows Update (NVIDIA VIDEO DRIVER) caused Explorer to crash . This has not happened before, however explorer suddenly crashed towards the end of the installation, after the screen turned off and came back on. Here are the Event Logs, seems it was trying to restart the Explorer service: - Restarting application or service 'NVIDIA Display Driver Service'. - Ending session 0 started 2009-05-19T04:48:03.675750000Z. - Application or service 'Windows Explorer' could not be restarted. Setting a USB key as "Dedicated ReadyBoost" lagged my system completely. The lag stopped after while, but during the "setup process" the window was showing up as "Not Responding". In fact, this occurs every time I make any changes with ReadyBoost on the USB Key. Following have been "fixed" or are easily "by-passable" or never were really bugs! OpenGL does not load when UAC is on . I keep getting an OpenGL failed to load error for an old game of mine when I had UAC enabled. After I disabled it, it worked perfectly. Game is JKA. And the following are some stuff that I think need to be taken a look at Viewing 'highly populated' items from a Item Menu (in the Start Menu) takes a while to load. I am mainly talking about the Administrative Tool. Every since I installed the new remote desktop admin tools (I enabled everything), the list became larger (naturally..) however, so did the load time. It takes a while from when I move my mouse over "Administrative Tools" to when I actually see the items. Hopefully this can be improved! I like the menu list because its quick to access; however these load times sort of kill that.

Hi AMailerFor the OpenGL problem, turn UAC back on andtry right clicking the file for the game and select the Run As Administrator option. This should give you the UAC popup dialog where you can approve the file starting.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta Ronnie Vernon MVP

Thanks Ronnie, that seems to have done the trick. Any idea about the "blank" screen? Its not a BSOD, its just a literal blank (black) screen. For now I have disabled the feature to turn the monitor off.

Hi AMailerGlad this helped on that second issue. No ideas about the blank screen issue? We'll keep an eye out for more reports on this.Regards,Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta Ronnie Vernon MVP

Hi,Could be naything cause the balck screen- video driver need to be updated- check mouse and keyboard properties, allowing this device to..etc-searchin the mb bios about the "waking up the computer from sleep mode" settings.- if you are using a laptop check the battery or the battery settings- if non of these will help then you might need a new windows 7 iso file ( not recommanded) I hope i have helped you a little bit. It's all about Windows. Hello, I checked off "allow this device to wake the computer" or whatever for the mouse now. I will test that soon. However, my friend, who also installed Build 7100 is also having the OpenGL error. With or without UAC disabled. He has an ATI Graphics card and everytime he tries to update it, the version does not change (after he checks the version, its the still the same). He gets the exact same, OpenGL failed to load. Any ideas? P.S. When he checked in the device manager, under display adapters, it says its using the Generic Microsoft WDDM Graphics Driver. Not the ATI one.

I haven't had any problems escaping from a blank screen, though I have noticed that everytime I enter the "Personalize" menu and select a new background, any changes I previously made disappear and the system returns to the default settings including removing the screensaver and reverting the menubar colors. I know it isn't a major bug, but it can be annoying. So far I am still looking. I'll report any other bugs I find.

If you right click on some internal folders and select open in start menu (Games / Administrative tools etc) Explorer.exe crashes.

I have the blank screen thing too. Changed all the sleep and wake up properties with no help. Ctrl+Alt+Del works to wake it up. Screen magically appears. I went through every setting and set to never (sleep, hibernate, screensaver, monitor, turn off hard drive, etc.) havent yet had another blank screen.... yet (24 hours later).I dont know if it will stay fixed or what did fix it for now.

I have the same black screen coming out of monitor off mode, but only sometimes. It's not sleeping, as i can still access shared folders from another computer. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work for me.. I have the newest nvidia drivers installed. I can get to the login screen via remote desktop, but then it just hangs and times out. Very strange.

Seem like driver issue. I also still have problem with my ATI. Installing driver in compatibility mode not solve that problem.

I get the same "blank monitor problem" on exit from sleep. As with other reports in this thread, it doesn't seem tohappen predicatblybased on what I've seen. What is strange however is that I only see the problem onthe primary monitor of a two screen setup; the second screen comes back fine, and I can interact with the PC. The only thing I've not been able to do is coerce the primary monitor back into life.If it helps... I'm running with an nVidia 8800GTX card with the latest drivers downloaded from the nVidia site as of today. My primary monitor is iiyama, the secondary is LG - model numbers escape me at the moment (I'm not near the PC with Windows 7 right now). Let me know if you need any more information.

The issue I am having is the inability to rename one of my hard drives. I am able to do it via disk management, and see the name change, but it does not translate to My Computer. The other issue I have is that the computer in Sleep Mode, wakes up after a few minutes on its own.

I'm using RC1 on an HP laptop, model HDX 16 1155CA. Specifications here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01633247&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3860262 I'm dual-booting with Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu 8 - but that shouldn't make a difference. Issue : When the computer is reactivated following either hibernation or "sleep", it is unable to reconnect to the wireless network to which it was connected before being shut off. This happens every time. So far that's the only bug I've found in RC1, and it could well be a hardware issue - seems like a very stable product!

Been using 7100 x64 RC1 for a fortnight and only found one thing that I'd consider a bug so far, and it's similar to AMailer's above: I was running a taskthat in x86 XP SP3 takes between 30 & 40 mins.Having previously confirmed the PC was on "max performance" power-plan and made sure screen saver, standby or hibernate weredefinitely off, I setthe app running &wandered off to do something else. Came back to the PC 45 mins or so later & some sort of partial shutdown had occurred: the monitor was blank, power to my USB hub was off,and no amount of key-pressing or mouse-wiggling & clicking brought the PC back up but all the case fans & LEDs (yeah, I know ;-) ) were still on. Soft-reset switch did nothing & I had to hold power-button for 5 secs. When I re-started the PC there was no indication of any previous fault, and after the PC booted to desktop, the app continued running from 40% completion where it had obviously reached when the power went off. The task, when completed, had executed with no noticeable errors due to the power-off. WTF? I didn't ever expect to say it again but Microsoft have possibly finally improved on XP (Best. OS. Ever.). I'd still prefer to have XPs advanced search.I'm a reasonably advanced user, I've got a pretty quick PC, and even though I've got 3.5TB's of storage,I created the folder structure on my drives, I know where I put my own files and I intensely dislike the assumption that I must be a numpty who can't find something without a helping hand from my PC. If muppets buy computers it's one thing to try and accomodate them, but at least give more experienced users the choice of how they want to find files. I don't like indexes or VSS either. I prefer security over quick searching.Anotherloss from XP that I'd like to see returned was the copy or move option from the file & folder tasks menu. I like having that choice and losing it in favour of a Windows-determined choice of moving or copying is a retrograde step, IMO.My tuppence-worth for the shutdown confirmation debate: I've been frustrated with being asked for years if I'm sure I meant that series of keystrokes or mouse-clicks I've done thousands of times over far more times than I've thought "damn, I didn't want to shut that down just yet". I'm quite happy it now just shuts down when you tell it to shut down.

Been using 7100 x64 RC1 for a few days now and have had a couple of issues, one major, which may be attributed to an issue between my mboard adn apiece of software rather than the os. I had several major startup issues after installation, so I began removing pieces of hardware, and I think my Gyration motion receiver with 1 gb of flash memory may have been the issue. 64 bit Itunes has crashed on me several times. Wish apple didn't make me use iTunes to sync my ipod touch. I can't determine where the issue is there.I have also had the screen blank where I could not recover from sleep. Since I use the system as a server anyway, I set the system settings to performance and have not had an issue since. Again, I can't tell if it was the system or my board. I downloaded new ATI drivers, but I have not reset to balanced to test if they make a difference or not.The OS seems much zippier to me, but I have never used an x64 OS before, so that may be the difference.

I just experienced a possible Bug in windows 7 I am running a compaq C751NR laptop with 2gigs of ram and it appears that the cpu fan was not running at the correct speed causing my laptop to over heat and shutdown with a blue screen after letting it cool for a while I have tryed to install the vista drivers from HP and so far I have been unable to recreate the problem. I dont know if this is more of a vendor issue then a Windows 7 issue but non the less figured I should report it.

(Edted & reposted from Microsoft Answers site)Issue: Windows 7 RC1 displays a blank screen when restarting the monitor after it has been powered off, even though sleep mode is disabled. Symptoms: After the display device (a DLP TV) has been off, turning it on again results in a blank screen. Moving or clicking the mouse, or hitting Esc, Break, Ctrl-Alt-Del, WinKey, Space, or Enter on the keyboard do not restore the desktop. The only remedy is to power down the computer using the On/Off button, and restart. System: 3GHz Intel P4, Asus P4C800-E deluxe motherboard, 2GB Ram, ATI Radeon 9800 AIW video board, DVI output to Samsung HDTV, USB based wireless keyboard (Gyration), USB wired mouse (Logitech). All drivers as installed by Windows 7 and reported to be latest versions by Windows Update. Latest Avast AntiVirus. OS version: Windows 7 RC1, build 7100 Power Options: New plan based on High Performance settings template, display set to never turn off, computer set to never sleep, hard disk set to never turn off, hybrid sleep off, hybernate set to never, wake timers either enabled or disabled, USB selective suspend set to never, screensaver disabled. Troubleshooting: When I turn off the TV, it goes through a shutdown cycle, during which the fan stays on to cool the lamp, after which a relay clicks, and the TV is completely off. If I restart it before this happens, I don't have a problem, but if I wait until after the relay clicks, I get a blank screen. If the computer is idle for several hours while the monitor is left on, I don't have a problem. Switching the monitor to a different input (ie: watching TV for several hours) doesn't seem to be a problem either. This seems to indicate that the video card output is turning off when it detects that the monitor is off, and then isn't turning back on again. Windows 7 is installed in a dual boot configuration on a system that also runs XP, and I have no problems with XP. I've checked the Microsoft Answers and TechNet forums, and found a number of postings about problems with Windows 7 sleep mode. After reading these, I turned off every sleep mode setting I could find, in both the basic and advanced modes, set my bios to allow PCI devices, mice, and keyboards to wake the system from sleep (there is no specific setting for USB devices though), and verified my video drivers were up to date. I haven't tried plugging in a standard mouse yet, to see if it gets better results than the USB version (mainly because I don't have one right now), butsince the computer shouldn't be going to sleep at all, why should I need to wake it? Since it doesn'tlook to be sleep related, what else could it be? Other than the power options I've already tried, are there any video driver specific settings that might cause this? I'm using the generic ATI drivers installed by Windows at this point, rather than the full Catalyst suite from ATI. There doesn't appear to be a setting that says "don't turn the video card off when the monitor is turned off", or anything obvious like that. I can try to find a version of Catalyst that works with Windows 7 if it will give me access to more settings, but I've read that there could be compatability issues when using the older versions (required by the Radeon 9800) with Windows 7. Current Status: Since the computer is an HTPC, and needs to be on all of the time to record shows, this is a major problem. I'm still lookingfor solutions, but until one can be found, I can't fully test RC1. Without a fix, I can'treally consider adopting Windows 7 when it is released either, much as I like most of the rest of it.

I've got the same issue. Generic system with Asus board - on board graphics and duo core CPU. I tried disabling all the power management and changing the keyboard to PS2. Nothing works - once that screen goes blank it's back to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Other than that it looks like this is a huge improvement on Vista ( which caused me to switch to MAC )

Re: "Nothing works - once that screen goes blank it's back to hold down the power button for 5 seconds." I still haven't solved the "blank screen when restarting the monitor after it has been powered off" issue, but I have found an alternative to using the power button. Provided you aren't running a big background job that can't be interrupted, the windows keyboard shortcuts to power down are: Windows Key -> Right Arrow -> Enter (Full Shutdown), or Windows Key -> Right Arrow -> Right Arrow -> R (Restart). You might also try: Windows Key -> Right Arrow -> Right Arrow -> S (Sleep Mode), or Windows Key -> Right Arrow -> Right Arrow -> W (Switch Users). I haven't tried them all yet, but the full shutdown worked for me. Just type the sequences in blind, and watch for activity. If they work for any of you, they might just save your drives from being corrupted by frequent hard shutdowns. Other than that, are there any new developments on the the black screen issue... anyone?

This is related and I am only mentioning it because it was my workaround to a particular game crashing if I powered down the monitor (to eat, etc):The bios had an option to disable onboard video if an external card was installed. I told it to never disable onboard video even if a card was installed (it wasn't). I will probably need to edit this after I reboot to get a quote, but yeah, it was bios related, inmho.a:"both exist and igpu by frame buffer detect"b:Igpu frame buffer detect disabledc:Igpu frame buffer size 512mb.(d)This made no sense (still doesn't)(e)it worked(f) since then I've re-installed the little room-heater to run benchmarks, so I don't have much more info right now.

Issue 1Printer HP DeskJet 880C conneted via USB got Driver for Modell 882C, (Mircosoft Printer Driver, HP hasn't set a own Driver for Vista or newer). Printing Texts works correctly until now, printing photos I haven't tested jet. May be both Modells use the same driver since Vista, but I don't think so.Issue 2How may I check how many space Windows 7 uses for shadowcopies and turn them of for a sertain Partion (I can't save a modified file on a 50 GiB Partion with 15 GiB free space). Both Issues refer to Build 7100.

Random freezes. Not BSOD, just hangs. The install of Windows 7 (build 7100) was "clean". Only essential drivers, all updated by the installer itself. For a release candidate to freeze randomly is very VERY bad. I thought that it was out of Beta. This seriously critical bug must be corrected and a fix available for download ASAP.If Microsoft wants to keep receiving bug reports and comments, they should make sure the "testers" won't get fed up with all these freezes and just stop using it. I guess we should all wait for Windows 7, SP1...

I seem to have resolved the black screen issue... At least.. to some extent. I've gone in and disabled ALL items under power saving.. anything that could put the computer into a low power or sleep mode ( this includes hibernate ) (basically it's set as an always on machine, hard disks never spin down, monitors never auto off, windows never sleeps/standsby/hibernates ) I've been running it like this for several hours, and normally would have had to hard reset by now ( and that would come with it's own headaches as Win7 tried to recover itself... never worked ) P4C-800 Deluxe P4 2.26 Northwood (non HT ) PNY 6800 GT ( AGP 8X ) 1.5 gigs of PC 2700 Soundblaster Audigy (sb0090) with the Daniel K Vista drivers. EVERYTHING works ( onboard Raid controller w/ IDE mode enabled ( for running non raid'ed drives ) (this was prolly the most difficult problem I encountered, if anyone needs the drivers, I'll be happy to toss someone a link )
July 9th, 2009 12:31pm

Turning off power management hasn't helped me. It seems that there are several black screen issues with Windows 7, some related to power management and sleep mode, some as a result of installation problems, and some caused by driver or hardware issues. Mine seems to be caused by the video output from my older ATI card shutting off when it detects that my monitor has been turned off, and then not turning on again when the monitor is turned back on. It does this even when all power saving options are turned off. I'm thinking that this is either because the card is too old and not properly supported (ie. the driver is not Windows 7 compatible), or the result of a DVI connection issue. If anyone else has experienced this problem, or better yet solved it, I'd love to hear from them.

I face the same black screen issue, with a standalone Win7 RC. I have an ATI 9800 with P4 2.4GHz and 1.5 GB RAM. I doubt that Linux or other WIN XP installs would cause this. Funny is even if I turn all the power saving options (very environment friendly...) off, still the blank screen comes up and the all gone. I am waiting for an ATI driver or WIN7 patch, I do not want to change my DVI cable.
July 25th, 2009 8:30am

Okay I do not have the exact same problem but it might as well be, I don't think it is a video card driver,Iam running Windows 7 RC 7100 just like everybody here I set everything to never sleep, no hibernate or standby the only thing I put on standby was the monitor and that is set for 2 hrs alright 5 hrs go by I move my mouse monitor comes out of standby I can see my background picture but nothing works start on the keyboard control+alt+delete the auto hide tasks bar will not come up it is just like it has locked up I have ATI video cards and the windows 7 drivers for them so if it was a video card problem I would not be able to come out of standby with the monitor the only thing at that point is to push reset to reboot when it rebooted the system knew there was a problem with the prompt safe mode or regular start up,I the went to the log and clicked it to send the error report and the page that came up said unknown and sent me here I guess with enough people we will get this bug figured out.

Might just be me, but, as soon as I installed the beta, I customised it to suit MY preferences. It did it easily. When the RC came out, I repeated the process.NO problems.I would just like to let some of you know, that ALL the 'features' that you 'miss' from XP & Vista, and reckon are 'gone' ARE still there. You simply need to know HOW to activate/use them.Almost ALL of the 'bugs' that I have seen reported, are due simply to the fact that the 'testers' WON'T learn the new OS, but rather keep wanting it to do things the way Vista & XP did.Guess what? It doesn't, but CAN.LEARN the new OS, instead of biatching about it, and you WILL learn to love it.BTW: I started on Win 2.0 and DOS 3, graduated to Win 3.11 & DOS 6.22, Best gaming OS of its day, and have used them all since.I don't just game, am currently beta-testing Office 2010, on top of win 7.Win 7 is THE best Microsoft OS, ever.Oh, and if you take the trouble to LEARN the new WinExplorer, is actually craps on Vista's from a great height, Win 98SE was THE best, tho.And yes, you CAN turn 'snap to grid' and 'Auto-arrange' off, try actually right-clicking on the desktop, there the options are, AND they work. No offense intended to any other posters.

To Max T:I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you're not simply trolling. I don't know whatthread you've been reading, but I've just skimmed through this one, and well over half of the 38+ posts are related to blank screen issues when coming out of standby. Of those remaining, only a small number expressed problemswith any of the new features, and I didn't see any claiming they missed features from a previous version of Windows. I might have missed something, but whatever is left hardly qualifies as "Almost ALL of the 'bugs'". I wouldn't accuse any of them of just "biatching about it" either. As one of the people looking for an answer to the blank screen issue, I can assure you that IHAVE taken the time to learn the new OS, and I'm NOT having problems configuring Windows 7 to suit my preferences, or using the new features. In fact, after playing with it a bit, I'm looking forward to switching over, if I can just find an answer to this one question. I'm still looking. If you haven't hadany problems, congratulations. But keep in mind thatthe blank screen issue, and several of the other"bugs" that have been mentioned here, seem to be at least partly hardware or driver dependant, and not everyone is experiencing them. If you've been lucky enough to have a 100% compatible hardware platform to test on, it doesn't mean everyone else has.Oh, and I've been workingin thecomputer fieldsince before the first IBM PC was introduced, and remember writing batch file shell menusin QDOS before Windows was even a gleam in Bill Gates' eye. I've used all of the previous versions of Windows, and was a beta tester for Win95, 98, XP, and Vista, so don't assume you're just dealing with a bunch of whining noobs here.
August 31st, 2009 10:55am

Sorry for not replying promptly, FingleDingle. No, not trolling, but could have mistakenly posted in the wrong thread, asI had a few (Win 7 related) open at the time..So far, I am very pleased with Win 7, had a few minor hiccups with the beta, but so farthe RC has been surprisingly stable.I have been trying to replicate the blank screen problem, but with no success. My machine is an Acer Aspire 5735 laptop with a 2G Core 2 Duo, 3G oof Ram & an Intel 4500MHD graphics chip, running either the Win7 drivers, or theVista/Acer drivers so is fairly up-to-date.Rest assured that if I can replicate the problem, or strike any others, and manage to effect a cure or pin-point the cause(s), I will post the results forthwith. If I cannot, then I certainly wish you, and other testers, success in ironing this one out.Again, apologies if I have upset anyone. Have a good one.

To Max T: Sorry for the slightly snarky reply to your first post. It seemed to be a bit off base in relation to this thread, but if you were posting to several others as well, I can see your point. I even agree with the RTFM elements, and encourage anyone who is checking out Windows 7 to take the time to learn the new features, and evaluate them with an open mind. When one door closes, another may open, so while you might not be able to do certain things the way you used to, the new way could prove to be faster and better. Some of the reported blank screen issues seem to be caused by problems with the power saving options. Others, like myself, who are getting blank screens after turning their monitors off and back on, are using older ATI video cards and/or DVI connections to their monitors, so if you don't use one or the other of these, you may never see this problem. I'm becoming resigned to the thought of buying a new video card when Windows 7 hits the stores, since ATI isn't updating the drivers for the one I have, and the old ones aren't quite cutting it. The only trouble is that my old card is AGP, and most of the new "supported" cards are PCI express. So I'll also need to get a new motherboard, which will need a new CPU, and memory, and yadda yadda yadda, which makes for a much more expensive upgrade than just buying the new software. It's too bad really, because other than this one issue, my system is well within the performance specs for Windows 7, and isn't having any other problems with it. While I won't mind the improved performance the new components promise, I don't really need them yet otherwise.

I am also having a blank screen issue. I installed Windows 7 while using an LCD monitor and everything worked perfectly. I switched to a CRT monitor and everything worked once. When I turned on my computer I could see everything as the computer was posting and even the starting Windows screen. Then, my monitor went blank like it went to sleep. The monitor works fine in safe mode. I found that I have to unplug the monitor's power for about an hour and I can see Windows again. It's annoying. The Windows sleep setting have also made the screen blank without any recovery. I have to unplug the monitor's power for an hour in order to get it to work again. I have tried this CRT monitor on two 32-bit desktop systems running Windows 7 and it still has the same issue. One is a Gateway Intel dual core processor, on board video, and 1 GB memory and the other is a P4 2.4 GHz, 1 GB memory, NVIDIA GeFORCE FX 5200 PCI card.

Just replying to all on the Blank screen. I have now put in the Retail version of Windows 7 on my machine. I also have a ATI video card (4550), This definitely is an issue with ATI cards, maybe not all of them. The ATI driver crashes when the monitor goes into stand by, also causing the explorer to crash and hang. I have an older Envision CRT monitor. This is not just an issue with the RC version of Windows 7. As far as operating systems go from Microsoft, the release of Windows 7 has out done the older versions of Windows in my opinion. This is the only issue I have encountered on to separate machines. My other machine has a Nvidia card in it. Until this issue is figured out I will just keep my machine from going into stand by and shut off the monitor.

I also have the blank screen problem when waking from sleep mode. I had this problem at work with a XP OS machine and the primary monitor. Our IT Dept. suggested powering down the monitor and unpluging it. After that, I did not have the sleep problem again. I tried this on my Windows 7 computer and so far this has fixed the problem. Now the mointor turns on when waking from sleep. Don't know how long it will keep working...

To FingleDingle: I don't think it's just older ATI cards as I have the a Radeon 4870 1gb and I can't solve the problem either. I am running an ASUS M4A78-E mobo, Phenom 955 BE proc, velociraptor for the 64bit 7 home premium. I had the same problem on a P5Q deluxe with a 8500 Intel and 64 bit. But I don't have the problem on my 32 bit 7 home Prem with a Radeon HD3850 and Intel mobo and Proc. It leads me back to the 64 bit system as the problem. I've tried both the generic PnP monitor drivers and LG drivers(Which pop up with Chinese[?] characters) to no avail. I've tried different bios settings in two different setups with no luck. I'm always waiting for the next AMD driver update hoping for the best. As for Windows 7 itself I really love it. But this blank monitor business is really annoying!
