Windows 7 Profile keeps being deleted
When I Add my Windows 7 PC to my Domain, my user profile gets deleted at log-off and reboot. I have 2 Machines, both loaded from scratch which do the same. I run a Small Business Server 2003 R2 machine which has not given me any hassles and I have Windows XP PC which also connects to the domain and logs in with the same username, and it does not have this problem.I recently installed a Windows 7 PC at a client which had a Lenovo Windows 7 Image preloaded and even that PC did not give the same results. What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to update?

Hi Novak...Thanks for the doc, but it does not apply to the problem that I have. Non of the error logs appear on my system, and there is no mention of an error related to temporary profiles.Maybe if I explain it differently or better, the error may present itself.I set up a brand new PC with Windows 7 Pro. I delete the partition and let windows create and configure the new partition.Once setup is complete, I check to see that I have the correct IP and DNS Settings for my domain and map the machine into the domain. After restarting, I log onto the machine as a domain user. I place a document on the desktop and in My Documents.I customise the desktop and Start Bar and reset Windows back to Windows 98 Look and feel. ( I prefer this as it works faster for me without the flash )I log off, and log back on.BAM. Clean Slate, New Profile.I check the Users Folder, and the profile is set back to when I logged in the second time. There is no PROFILE.00x to indicate that the profile has been renamed or a profile indicating that it is a temp profile. File and folder creation is consistent with a new profile being created at logon time. The only errors which get logged is that the registry was busy during log-out, but this is no uncommom, even on Windows XP and on my servers.Where am I going wrong? Who can I speak to to get an answer or solution? Is this a BUG that Microsoft has not picked up?PS... I get the same results on my Windows 7 RC installation on my 2 Lenovo Laptops.

Hi, Here are two possible causes: Possible Cause 1: The account that you use to log on to the computer is a member of one or more of the following groups: Guests Domain Guests Possible Cause 2: The current user's profile was accidentally deleted from the system. Based on my research, I suggest you perform the following steps on one of the laptop to troubleshoot the issue. Solution 1: Remove the user account from the Guests Group and from the Domain Guests group. For more information, refer to the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940453 Solution 2: 1. Log on to the system by using an administrative user account other than the user account that is experiencing the problem. 2. Backup all data in the current use's profile folder if the profile folder still exists, and then delete the profile folder. By default, the profile resides in the following location: %SystemDrive%\Users\UserName 3. Click Start menu, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. 4. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\ProfileList 5. Under the ProfileList Subkey, delete the Subkey that is named SID.bak. Note SID is a placeholder for the security identifier (SID) of the user account that is experiencing the problem. The SID.bak Subkey should contain a ProfileImagePath registry entry that points to the original profile folder of the user account that is experiencing the problem. 6. Exit Registry Editor. 7. Restart the system and log on to the system with the problematic user account. After you log on to the system, the profile folder is re-created. For more information, refer to the KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947242 Thanks, Novak

Thanks for the help Novak. For some reason some previous sysadmin had added my problem user account to domain guests as well as several other unnecessary groups. Anyway, the information you provided resolved the problem of the profile being deleted at log-off.

Hi Novak...Thank you for the assistance.Yes, my account was a member of both the guest and domain guest account. I normally add my account to all groups to ensure complete access to my server and domain resources. Although this has not been a problem under XP or Vista, it appears 7 has an issue with this setting on membership.BigBull and myself appreciate your assistance in this matter.
