Windows 7 Professional Losing Network Shares Permanently
I've seen lots of post with regards to win 7 losing shares during use that come back when the pc is rebooted but ours don't the shares are lost permanently, We have a small network of around 100 users running on a 2003 network. the problem we are having is 4 of our windows 7 systems have stopped being able to access the network shares, have tried changing NICs (none are Boardcom) this has made no difference. We have also tried lowering the security settings in Local Security Policy/Security Options and adjusting NTLM settings. The message we are getting is: Network Error Windows cannot access \\server\share Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve problems, click Diagnose. What is strange is that we can ping the servers by name and ip we can also RDP into the servers, the pc's have access to the internet and outlook updates from exchange server, but we are unable to browse them. We have 2 x server 2003 DC's 1 has a general share folder which sync's users my documents on xp pc's we also have 1 buffalo nas box. On the network we have a 2003 exchange server 1 x 2003 terminal servers and ironport web security proxy server and a watchguard firewall we are using the x 64 version of win 7

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. As I understand that you can ping the server, but you can’t be able to browse the shared folder. It seems that the share folder isn’t resolved correctly. To resolve this kind of issue, please take the following steps: 1. Access the shared folder using IP address: \\IPAddress\shared_folder 2. Access the shared folder using FQDN name: \\server.domain.com\shared_folder If you can access the folder by FQDN name, please enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Windows 7: 1) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. Hi Dale, We have tried the above and it has made no difference. If this helps on the previous 3 pc’s this happened on we have had to reinstall win 7 on the same hardware and all has been fine so far, so we know it’s not a hardware issue. The problem has now happened on a system that we have time to trouble shot in detail. On the last system we removed it from the domain and tried to rejoin it, but it was unable to connect to the 2003 DC and we also tried to join it to our 2008 labs environment again it said it was unable to connect to the 2008 DC, at that point we had to reinstall. While it could be a coincidence the win 7 systems seem to be dropping off the network in order that they were installed but not necessarily in the same time frame. All 4 of the systems had been working fine up to this point and there is nothing in the event logs to say any service has failed the only entries are group policies failing to connect to server and Sophos antivirus failing to connect to its update server. As I said in my original post we can RDP to servers by name and IP address and we can ping by IP and FQDN and browse the internet, so we do have network connectivity. IP address is assigned by DHCP however the event logs shows that win 7 cannot update its DNS record, DHCP and DNS are on the same DC. Pete

Hi Pete, It seems that the DNS doesn’t update correctly on Windows 7. Please collect the trace from client machine with the following 2 scenarios: 1. Collect trace with IPv4 and IPv6 option checked, run the command: ipconfig /registerdns on Windows 7 machine. 2. Collect trace with only IPv4 checked, run the command: ipconfig /registerdns. Compare the two trace and see if you got IPv4 and IPv6 registered correctly. BTW, I would like to share: DNS updates may be incorrectly reported as failed when you use a third-party DNS server application for DNS registration on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 You incorrectly receive an error message when you join a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Samba 3-based domain Best Regards Dale Qiao TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Hi Dale, When I run the above command from an elevated CMD I get the following: Windows IP Configuration Registration of the DNS resource records for all adaptors of the computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes. Ive had a look in the event viewer and cant find anything. (it may be the day Im having) where do I find the trace? Any other ipconfig trace list in the CMD prompt. Cheers Pete

Hi Pete, if you try to access just \\server, can you reach the server? The idea is to find if the connection issue is to open the server NBT or the Share. Best regards, ClaudioSe foi til, no se esquea de Marcar como Resposta. Cludio Costa - http://claudio-costa.blogspot.com

Hi Claudio We can not access the server except by RDP and we are able to ping the servers. If I try \\server I get the same message as stated above. Pete

That`s a problem i have not seen yet. Is this 2003 Standard or SBS? Can you have something limiting the number of connections like firewall, SBS or share Policy?Se foi til, no se esquea de Marcar como Resposta. Cludio Costa - http://claudio-costa.blogspot.com

Hi Claudio, We are running 2003 standard and the firewalls on the servers are switched off. It's not a share policy issue as I'm one of the first in in the morning and it still will not connect it only see's it's self and we've put a new NAS box in and it doesn't see the shares but it can see the device, it also see's the network printers and can print to them. I know that if I do a clean re-install the problem will be solved, but that won't find the root problem, as a clean install works every time we know it's not the hardware. We don't have this problem with win xp pro systems or vista Pete

I have been on vaction for a week during this time I've tried connecting the laptop to a 2008 domain (unable to connect to domain) and a home workgroup with a Home Server again it can not connect to the shares. So I believe this is a Win 7 issue not a domain issue

I've been having major issues with restoring my win 7 shares after a catastrophic failure. None of my Linux machines were able to connect again with a password error After many failed attempts I started looking into the default local security settings in the MMC and YES! We have a resolution. Go into the windows network login section in MMC and make your changes here On reboot all is working again although I did open it up with no security to start off I am confident that the security can now be re-activated on a one at a time basis till I find the culprit! Best of luck to all on this
