Windows 7 Problem- Unidentified Network
Hey guys so I have a problem, I've tried lots of fixes and none of them worked. My network is a home network and everything used to be working fine until the power cut in my house. Then it came back and cut again. Then the internet worked. However it didnt work on my computer. Everything else was working around the house. My brothers computer had the internet working fine and the wireless was working fine, but my computer kept saying Identifying.... Unidentified network. I have never had this problem. I thought something was wrong with the internet cable so I tried to plug it into my laptop and the internet worked on my latptop. I tried it on another and it also worked. I put it back in my computer and it again kept saying... indentifying... unidentified network. I thought something was wrong with my windows so I did a system restore. It didnt fix the problem. I reinstalled Windows 7 and it also didnt fix the problem.. I tried to delete the network device from device manager then restart my computer... Then it automatically installs but also it didnt work.. I tried to disable and re-enable but it also didnt work.. you see all the stuff I did... I tried to reset the router but it also didn't work... I also tried to place my cable in another port... again nothing... Is there anything else I can do..?

try renaming your SSID in the router. This will cause Windows to make a new network connection. Jerry

Hi, * open Control Panel>>Network and sharing center manage wirless connection (on left side of screen this should be a panel) remove all saved wireless credentials. Connect Wireless Now, it should ask you for security password (make shur it should be correct) Note: if this also doesn't work use below method. * Can you put manually IP address? do you know what IP network are you using? * use PC which has working internet connection, open command prompt type ipconfig /all see the wireless ip, use same ip range but not the same (ip must be unique) harjit

I had the following problem No internet Unidentified Network (Public Network) on local network LAN cable I fixed it as follows: 1. Create a .CMD file "FixNetwork.CMD" for example The file contains the following commands (cut and paste if you like) @ECHO OFF ipconfig /release ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /setclassid ipconfig /registerdns ipconfig /renew ROUTE PRINT ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0 netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt EXIT 2. Right click FixNetwork.CMD Run as ADMINISTRATOR The program will start. 3. Unplug the network LAN cable on the computer and wait for the program to completely finish. 4. Plug network LAN cable back into the computer Network connection should be fixed and no more "Unidentified Network" I have not tried but disabling a wireless adapter in place of unplugging the LAN cable may fix Wirless problem?

I looked at the procedure to set Windows 7 to automatically mark an unidentified network as Home. The stated procedure is not applicable to Windows 7 Home Premium. I will probably pursue this casually. But my original goal was merely to assure that my little network functioned correctly. I foolishly chose Windows file sharing to give me some confidence that I had assembled my network correctly. I had not anticipated that Windows 7 would thwart that effort. I am giving up on Windows 7 as a platform for home networking. I will be enabling multi-boot on my Windows 7 laptop. I'll probably create a bootable Windows XP partition and repeat my file sharing test without the interference from Windows 7. My sympathies to anyone else trying to create a simple home network with Windows 7 who may be getting the unidentified network condition.

I have the "unidentified network" condition on an absurdly simple network. I am connecting my Windows 7 laptop and a Windows XP desktop. Thats it. No Internet access. The two systems are connected by a Ethernet crossover cable. I can also plug standard Ethernet cables into a switch. As far I know, I don't think I need a router to connect two systems in this way. Still I get the "unidentified network" on Windows 7. Because its unidentified, it comes up as a Public Network each boot. I can finagle to change it to a Home Network, but should this be necessary every time? For weeks I concluded that my little network was dead and that I needed to resolve this "unidentified network" condition before I could do anything useful like filesharing. I spent weeks playing around, to eliminate it. I found that by configuring a Default Gateway with a valid IP address, the unidentified condition would disappear and be replaced by a numbered "Network". But, I'm not convinced that this was a valid thing to do. I'm still trying to get file sharing to work between the computers. I had been running the Windows Firewall on my laptap since I take it with me from place to place and connect to the Internet via public Wifi. I believe that the firewall was blocking some components of file sharing. Once I stopped the firewall, I could see the shared resources on system itself. It may be necessary to stop the firewall on the other computer to view the shared resources across the little network. I have yet to try this to be sure. I have searched all over the Internet for a resolution to the "unidentified network" condition. I have tried all sorts of mojo and incantations to resolve. Should I be concerned about this condition? Exactly what does it mean? In all the proposed remedies, noone had any sort of understanding of what actually caused the condition. This simple two-PC network should work, I think. Its hardly rocket science. I'm a networking rookie, yes, but I shouldn't have so much trouble getting this work correctly.

You are correct about the default gateway setting. That is how NLA detects unidentified networks. The solution is to change your security settings so that unidentified networks are not marked as public. That is the default (to protect you from attack when connecting to public networks such as hot spots) but like all settings it can be changed. In a closed network like yours you can safely change the setting to make unidentified networks private. Thanks for the direction. I'll give it shot and report back here. I've been at wits end trying to get this simple 2 PC network to function.
