Windows 7 Pro unable to join Samba 3.3.7 domain; doesn't exist or could not contacted...
I'm running a Linux server with Samba 3.3.7. It is configured as a domain controller.
I have a Windows 7 Pro laptop which I'm having trouble adding to the Samba domain.
I've made all the required Windows registry changes (which are well doucumented and
discussed on this site). Below is my smb.conf file. I realize this is not a Samba
group but I'm hoping that maybe something might jump out to someone about my
configuration that maybe be wrong.
When I do attempt to register into the domain I receive the error message that
my laptop could not "join the domain because the domain either doen't exist or
could not be contacted".
The strange thing is that I can see and access the shares on the Linux server
when I got into the Windows Explorer (file manager). I can even map drives from the
Linux shares using \\domain-name\share-name.
Is the above method the same as joining the domain? Does Windows 7 Pro have an
NT/2000/XP-Pro style login screen?

Update. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue. Below is output from NetSetup.LOG when I attempt to join the domain. The lines in bold appear to be the issues but I'm not sure how to resolve them.

If the NetLogon service isn't running, will I be able to make the domain connection to the Samba domain controller?

Hi,
You could try the following method to check how it works:
Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy -Local Policies - Security Options
Network security:
·
LAN Manager authentication level: Send LM & NTLM responses
·
Minimum session security for NTLM SSP: Uncheck Require 128-bit encryption
Meanwhile, considering this issue is also related to a Linux server and we have limited resources to help, it is also recommended that you contact the Support of
the Linux server for help.
Hope it helps.

Thanks Alex for your reply. Yes I did try those options without success though. You're right, it appears to be a combined Linux/Samba issue. A couple of days ago I was able to successfully attach my Windows 7 Pro laptop to the domain at my workplace which
ives me a warm fuzzy that its not my laptop with the problem. Looks like Samba has some wotk to do. I've pretty much given up on this issue. Just a little more complicated than I anticipated. Moving on. :-(
