Windows 7 Pro print spooler stopping
Hello, I have a few Windows 7 Pro x64 machines in my office on which the print spooler will randomly stop, and sometimes need to be manually started to get going again even when set to automatically recover. I don't know what is stopping it, and I can't reproduce the issue, as it happens at random. It occurs often, once or twice every couple of days. I have all the latest drivers for the printers installed, as well as SP1 for Windows 7. I have removed all the printers, deleted their drivers, removed their entires in the registry, and reinstalled the printers, but the issue still remains. Other Windows 7 Pro machines with the same exact setup, hardware and printers do not have this issue. Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue and keep the print spooler from crashing?

Hi, Please confirm the default Local Print Provider firstly. Follow these: 1. Use Regedit to locate the Print key in the Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print 2. Click to highlight the Print key in regedit and export the key as a .reg file for backup purposes 3. Local the Local Port Registry key: HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Local Port 4. Confirm that the Driver value in the Local Port Registry key is set to Localspl.dll. If it is not, double-click the Driver value to edit the Data String and set it to Localspl.dll. After these, check the result. Hi All, I would suggest installing the recent printing rollup update for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2, link to my blog about it below: http://aidinit.com/2012/03/update-rollup-for-the-core-printing-components-in-windows-7-windows-server-2008-r2-and-windows-small-business-server-2011-sbs2011/ Most recent HP and Xerox printers are supported by the Universal Print Driver for Windows, this is usually updated every few months and will support all your printers features. The big advantage in a network environment is that you can install the same universal print driver and use it for all your different printers, this reduces the risk of the print spooler falling over because of conflicting drivers from multiple vendors. The HP UPD runs in Printer Driver Isolation Mode so a problem should not cripple the whole print spooler, it will only effect that printer. PCL and PS drivers are often available for a printer, one may be better for printing Word and Excel documents and the other better for printing PDF or Images. Please review my blog post on this matter http://aidinit.com/2011/10/which-printer-driver-postscript-ps-or-pcl-how-about-both/ Hope this helps. Stuart
