Windows 7 Pro hangs on Please wait after update
I found threads about this problem in Vista fora but not Seven ones, so please forgive the cross-post as I posted there in the hope of some assistance. This is however I think the more appropriate forum.
In this thread, A.Hohensee writes:
Hello, I am experiencing a similar issue, with Windows 7 Ultimate, the system updated recently with a critical patch, recently being in the last few days. The system gets to the "Please Wait" screen and there it sits. I have disabled the
NLA Service as Chuck5566 has commented on with resolving his problem. Unfortunately that did not cure mine.
I have attempted the MSConfig routine that was also discussed in this posting, and I get the same result... the system hangs at "Please Wait"
Any additional help would be nice.
I have exactly the same issue as A.Hohensee and wondered if there has been any progress on this. My client's laptop is a Lenovo T410i with Windows 7 Pro and is not a member of a domain, using only local profile. So far, I've tried:
Booting to Safe Mode and disabling all Services - no change or progress Downloading the password-protected KB fix from MS but you can't run this in Safe Mode and you can't get into Normal Mode!
Rolling back to the last System Restore point - no success Rebuilding from Recovery Partition and doing things in a different order - same result
Always the same result, hanging at Please wait before the login prompt, and I can't pinpoint which update it is that breaks it. I'm now looking at potentially paying MS £199 to fix a problem that they caused and the published potential fix for which
is useless! Any help appreciated.

Updates are as follows:
KB970420
KB970858
KB970789
KB969497
KB915597
There is a SiS update as well. I've reinstalled and ran updates just for Windows and it was still able to restart. I tried to update the SiS driver and lo and behold it hangs. I'm reinstalling as I'm writting this. Is there a way to stop the
Updates from installing? At least I just started, I hate to have to reload Windows and data everytime a hardware update makes Windows 7 unresponsive.

Please boot in Safe Mode. Then open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Select all the contents of the Windows distribution folder, and then delete them. Also remove the file C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml. After doing that please restart the computer. Temporary
disable the antivirus, and run Windows Update again. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
