Can bitlocker be installed on Windows 7 Pro? Even if no TPM device on laptop?

Microsoft didn't license Windows 7 Professional to use Bitlocker. You have to use Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate to use it."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Okay, I have Windows 7 Pro on my system, yet I have both BitLocker and BranchCache services (set to manual, but both start properly), which supposedly are features that are only included in the Ultimate/Enterprise Edition. So, what's the story there? These are supposedly features not included in this version, yet they show up in the services list of every Win 7 Pro system I've seen.

I believe the Bitlocker in Windows 7 Pro only lets you encrypt the local drive but not external drives. Bitlocker in Windows Ultimate/Enterprise allows you to encrypt external drives such as usb thumb drives or another type of external storage.

Windows help has a specific informational/tutorial page for Bitlocker, which says it is available for ALL versions of Windows 7. Thus I attempted to locate and use it on my Windows 7 Professional operating system. (Control Panel - Security - Bitlocker, per Windows instruction page.) It was not present (and, of course, there is not actually a CP option called "Security", but one called "System and Security"). Additional research located other Windows pages, comparing the Win7 versions; these all stated that only Ultimate has Bitlocker. As usual, Windows needs to get its act together and stop confusing its customers with misinformation. (Interesting: did one more search of Windows under "Bitlocker" and came across other tutorial pages that DO say it's only available on Ultimate. Make up your mind!)

"Andre.Ziegler: No, Windows 7 doesn't include Bitlocker in any kinds!" I assume your intention was to write Window 7 PROFESSIONAL. My Windows 7 Starter includes BitLocker for external drives/memory sticks.

"rickh68: I believe the Bitlocker in Windows 7 Pro only lets you encrypt the local drive but not external drives. Bitlocker in Windows Ultimate/Enterprise allows you to encrypt external drives such as usb thumb drives or another type of external storage." Are you sure you didn't mean the other way around? My Windows 7 Starter includes BitLocker for external drives/memory sticks. And I assume this would be the case for W7 Pro aswell. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

I think the Bitlocker Encrytion Service is available in all versions of Windows 7 to provide the encryption services for folders, like you can encrypt folders in Windows 2000/03/XP but the drive encryption feature is only available in Ultimate and Enterprise versions, although don't quote me on it.

Just wanted to clarify Bit Locker is can be found on all versions of Windows 7. It is in the services as said in the earlier post. However it does not allow me to encrypt external drives. P.S. services is not a folder its located in administrative tools if you double click services you will see bit locker and the service start up is set to manual. I have started service but still does not allow me to encrypt external drives. Alternatly you can find services here C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tool

Bitlocker encryption is only available with Ultimate/Enterprise editions of Windows 7. All Windows 7 editions will be able to open a bitlocked device with the passcode.
