Windows 7 PPOE Issues
I have been searching through sites to see if I could fix this issue. I am trying to connect my Windows 7 laptop directly to my ISP Comtrend ct-5072T External Modem using a PPOE connection. I saw numerous sites that said there was an issue with RASPPPOE.SYS so I went and renamed it and pulled down a Vista version of the file. When I configure it for use I get an error in Hardware Manager that says it has no driver for the product. When I try to connect with the old driver I get a 651 error, with the new driver I get a 797 error.... the reason for trying all this... it starts with .5 meg download speeds when I am connected through my router. I had my ISP come in and replace my DSL modem to the one above, I have replaced the router, cable between router and modem and finally thought let me connect directly to the router with my PC. When the ISP was here using his laptop directly connected to the modem he got 8+megs download speed.... All I can get is .5meg. This is a laptop and I use it in 2 locations (home and cottage) at home I get 9megs dl.... here .5 so I do not believe its a problem with the laptop...and having replaced Modem, cables and router.... I am stumped!! If anyone can help it would be appreciated!

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please rename the “RASPPPOE.SYS” file to “RASPPPOE.SYSold” and create a new PPPoE connection to see if it works. 2. Update the NIC driver. 3. Run the following commands one by one in an elevated command prompt in Windows 7 and see how it works: netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled 4. If possible, please try another NIC and see how it works. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi Nicholas, you are correct I have now connected my workstation to the modem successfully. So now I would like to move into why I had wanted to connect the modem. Some time back I realized that I was getting .5mb throughput on my modem. I called up my ISP who came over immediately and replaced the modem. He hooked his laptop up to the modem running Windows XP - started IE and went to www.speedtest.net I saw he was getting 8.2mb throughput or download speed. So I said Thank You and he left. I connected up my router again and it gave me .5mb download speed. So I called up the router people who upgraded the firmware and removed their protection software - same issue - reduced MTU size - same issue they said it was a hardware issue. I replaced the 8 month old (Linksys) router with a DLINK Xtreme N router and still got .5mb download. I then thought the only piece not yet replaced was the cable between router and modem... replaced it ...same issue. So that is when I decided to connect my laptop directly to see what speeds I would get directly connected to the modem... it shows .5mb download. So you are aware I use this laptop in 2 places. This location has ADSL connection. My other place has Cable Modem - with cable modem and this same laptop I get 9.3mb download speeds. I also have a Windows XP laptop here that I just tried (wirelessly) and speedtest gives 0.55mb downloads on that one.... I am trying to figure out why my speeds are so low while the ISP had 8mb download on his laptop.....If you can help it would be very much appreciated.

Nicholas, how do you rename the file when TrustedInstaller will not let you. Have tried many methods to turn installer off no success. Unable to establish internt connection due to error 651

I've followed these instructions and other advice I found online and am still having no luck. When I first got my computer the connection was fine for a few days, but after an update, it hasn't worked since. I started with error 651, after following all the instructions I now have error 797. I bought a new windows 7 compatible modem and it doesn't work either. I have to keep my old computer (xp) running to access the net. I don't know what to do next and would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hi Nicholas, my issue has now been resolved. After visiting my friend and finding my speeds high, I came home and tested phone lines from the de-embarcation point with same slowness. My ISP and Internet provider are the same so I called them. I explained all of the tests I had performed and the new router I had purchased etc. They asked me to hold for about 4-6 mins and then came back and said they would call me back in another 30mins. A different person called back and I asked what had changed that they expected my issue to be resolved (it was still slow at this point). The young lady explained they had made a configuration change to my account and were waiting for it to replicate and that I should call back in 1 hr and let them know if the issue persisted. 15 mins later my speed was up to 10.16Mb and I let them know. In my case I spent several weeks chasing this issue, purchasing new hardware, bothered all kinds of people... to find out the issue wasn't mine to start with. I had them give me a rebate. They would not tell me what settings were changed on their end. Thanks for all your help!
