Windows 7 Offline Files - Attempting to sync entire users share!
Hello, Our environment is set up to use Offline files and I am running Windows 7 while most users are using XP. I am encountering sync errors. When I open up Sync Center--> View sync partnerships --> Offline Files I see that it appears to be trying to sync not just my users directory, but all users directories for the entire company: users (\\fileshare1) Status: Sync Failed users (\\Fileshare1.Test.Local) Status: Sync Failed users(\\files.Test.local) Status: Sync Failed Offline Files in windows XP seemed to make a lot more sense if I recall correctly, it would only attempt to sync network folders that had been ticked for make available offline. In my case it appears that Windows 7 is attempting to sync every single files from ever single network share ??? Luckily this process errors out due to the fact that I don't have permissions to other users home drives, however I need to correct this if there is a misconfiguration somewhere. My question is, how do I view exactly what is being made available offline in Windows 7? Am I still able to select that only certain folders are available offline?

It should be caused by the policy of your domain. Windows 7 users can define sync folders themselves. To view details of offline folders, please open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Sync Center, click “Manage offline files” in the left pane.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Within Manage Offline files I have the options:<Disable Offline Files><Open Sync Center><View your offline Files>I have tried the following:1. Disabling and re-enabling offline files using Disable offline files2. open Sync Center just takes me back to the sync center which isn't much help3. View offline files --> This looks strange to me because instead of seeing files/folders that are configured to be avilable offline I see:Computers --> within this folder I see:fileshare1Fileshare1.Test.Localfiles.Test.localI think this could be the source of my problem. When I open each computer within my offline files I see the base users directory (Not my personal users directory but the base directory for all users in my company) This is exactly what it's trying to sync and failing, but I don't see any option to not synch those files. Is this something that needs to be fixed through group policy?

You may read the following articles for more information. Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide What's New in Folder Redirection and User Profiles Arthur Xie - MSFT Thanks for your help. I've discussed it with the rest of my team and we have determined that nobody else in our domain has the priviledges to configure folder redirection for Windows 7 users. Is does not appear that anyone other than windows 7 users are being affected. To sum it up: All windows 7 machines are attempting to synch ALL of their network shares offline. This is generating errors because the user accounts don't have the privildges on the folders they're trying to synch. I can't see options in the synch center when logged in locally to a Windows 7 machine. I believe that these settings are being pulled down from Domain policy however my team assures me that no such policy has been configured. This leads me to strongly suspect that either a GPO has been configured incorrectly or this is the default Windows 7 behaviour for a client machine. I suspect the latter would be reported as a widespread issue, so I'm more inclined to believe we have a GPO issue. Is there a way to determine which GPO is causing this specific setting (folders configured for synchronization)? Many thanks!

How does the sync relationships establish if users do not manually configure it? For example, on your computer, the sync relationships with the following folders should not exist if you do not manually configure them. \\fileshare1\users \\Fileshare1.Test.Local\users \\files.Test.local\users The users folder on these computers should not be related to the C:\users folder in your system. You may check the folder C:\users in your system and see if there is anything incorrect. I suggest you open the following website for more information about Offline Files. Understanding offline files In order to avoid confusion, you may change the names of the “users” folders on these file share servers. After doing so the offline folder on your computer would also be changed.Arthur Xie - MSFT

We have the same issue at our organization: For instance - A user at one of our clients has a network share set up in the following format: \\server\private\user_1\ In this share are two folders as below: \\server\private\use_1r\synced_files \\server\private\user_1\nonsynced_files So we have a sync set up for synced_files to always be available offline, however, while the folder "synced_files" does sync, this user will get a bunch of errors for all the other users private folders. example: user_2(\\server\private) This file is currently not available for use on this computer user_3(\\server\private) This file is currently not available for use on this computer and so on Does windows 7 try to index the whole directory structure even tho only ONE folder is set to always be available offline?
