Windows 7 Not Seeing one or more AD Printers when adding printers
We migrate to Windows 7 and have 11 network printers. When adding a printer to a Windows 7 machine ( "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"), it finds 10 printers, one printer is missing. But, this printer is listed in the AD and can be via search in AD.SSDP service is up on WIndows 7.All printers are published in AD. Print server is Windows 2008 x32.The printers are properly found and listed on the XP clients.Gents, how to fix that ?We have a lot of silly questions from our users, where is our color printer...

I always give them the easy route, we have 3 print servers, depending on where they are, I just have them type in the server //fs1/ as an example, it'll list all the printers on that server, have them right click and connect, then tell them how to set it as default. another way I do it, is just email them the link to it like//fs1/wsm-hp6940 and have them right click that and connect, adds it to their print queue. Its much much quicker than doing add printer sequence, 5 seconds as oppose to doing the other way. ;) and not only that, you can add the 2nd, 3 and whatever printer 2 seconds each one after anotherMCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. It should not be a network issue because other printers work well. I suspect that this is a driver issue. The driver on the server is for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and may be not compatible with Windows 7. You may try to involve the Windows 7 compatible driver in the print management console on the server, then check the result. Please note that if the printer manufacturer does not provide an universal printer driver, but only a driver installation program, you may not be able to install the driver on the server. In this case, you can try to install the printer driver on one of the Windows 7 clients, then follow the steps below to involve the driver in the AD remotely from the client computer. 1. Install the driver on one of the Windows 7 clients.2. Launch mmc from Start Search box.3. Click File->Add/Remove Snap-in.4. Add "Printer Management". Point to the Windows Server 2008 server in "Specify the printer server". 5. Expand "Printer Management"->"Printer Servers"->"Drivers". 6. Right-click, then click "Add a driver". Select the newly installed driver. Whether the above method works also depends on the design of the printer driver. If this method does not work, users need to manually install the printer drivers on client computers. Then point to the shared printer. Most printer driver installation program can help us to install a shared printer. During the installation, it may prompt that if you would like to install a local printer or a network shard printer. Then select the correct option and finish the installation.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Sure, I can install this printer manually. But it's not our way :)Users should have clear and simple guide. We've updated driver to the latest from Xerox. This Xerox Global Print driver is Windows 7 compatible. No changes. We've got only Xerox printers. This issue with Xerox Color printer. The same driver is used for two b&w Xerox printers.

I was also having this issue and was able to resolve it by making the location(field) of the printer (printer properties) match the A.D. site location (A.D. sites and services, site properties, location tab, location (field))

Wow! Thanks for answer. I found this good article: http://mcpmag.com/articles/2004/07/01/printer-location-tracking.aspx I found some tricks. I did only two things: 1. Subnet location must be placed for user/server/printer subnets I entered it as Moscow. All my printers are located in the special VLAN/subnet. 2. Location tab for printers are entered as: Moscow/floor/place User can search all printers in the Moscow office. If user added a printer from this search list and he will try to search printers again, he will not see the already added printer. But if he added a printer from AD search, he will see this printer in the search list. It seems this wizard saves the list of the added printers the registry. Just FYI. mcse^4
