Windows 7 Not Seeing AD Printers when adding printers
Have several Windows 7 machines on a Windows 2008 domain that has 50 network printers. When adding a printer to a Windows 7 machine, it does not find any, even though the printers are listed in the AD (dedicated server managing). Yes, I can manually add the printer to each Windows 7 machine, but that bypasses the management / print quota /etc we have setup. What do I need to do to get the Windows 7 to communicate and see the domain hosted printers? The printers are properly found and listed on the XP clients.

Hi, Please try the following: Troubleshoot network printer problems At this time, I would like to know how you publish or deploy the printers, if possible, please republish the printers on your server side and try the following: GP Preferences: Add a new printer, set as default Hope this helps. thanks for the response.Currently, we setup a network printer with a static IP. We then add the printer to our Print Server manually specifying the IP adding drivers/etc. We then share that printer and publish in AD. We do not have printers assigned thru group policy - users add printers they want.Following the Troubleshoot network printer problems: If Windows can't detect a printer that you want to use, follow these steps to find and add the printer manually: Open Printers by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers. Click Add a Printer. In the Add Printer Wizard, select Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer. On the Choose a network printer page, click The printer that I want isn't listed. 5. On the Find a printer by name or TCP/IP address page, choose how to find the printer that you want to use, based on the type or location of the printer, and then click Next.Step #5 is what we end up having to do and selecting find in AD. The AD listing works and we can add the printer that way.Question is, Why isn't the printer listed (Message says No Printers Were Found.), before we have to select "The printer that I want isn't listed". What would be listed?

Hi, Regarding the issue that the printers are not listed in the Select a printer window, based on my research, I would like to suggest the following to have a check: 1. Please ensure that the SSDP Discovery service is started. 1) Log on to the client computer by using an account that has administrator permissions. 2) Click Start, click Run, type services.msc (without quotations) in the Open box, and then click OK. 3) In the list of services, double-click SSDP Discovery. 4) In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply. 5) Under Service status, click Start to start SSDP Discovery. 6) When the service is started, click OK, and then quit the Services snap-in. 2. Check your group policy settings: 1) You can run RSOP.msc on the Windows 7 client to check if there are any policy settings which are related to printers has been applied. You can check: User Configuration Administrative Templates Control Panel Printers 2) You may also gather the following for our further research: Please run the tool gpresult on the server and client sides to export the current Group Policy settings: Open an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: gpresult /v d:\ policy.txt. For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link. I'm having the same issue:Windows Server 2003 sp2 with 22 Printers shared and listed in Active Directory. From a Windows 7 client:Start | Devices and Printers | Add a printer | Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printerIn the the Select a printer window, only one of the 22 Printers configured on the local Print Server is presented. If you choose "The printer that I want isn't listed", I can successfully use the Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature option, in the Search Results, all 140+ AD Printer objects are visible. My question is, why is there only one printer presented in the initial window for selection, I have without success tried to establish why that particular printer is displayed versus the 21 others that do not appear until I use the Find a printer in the directory option.NOTE: I've checked the SSDP Discovery services (doesn't look like it's for AD objects), and I've executed the RSOP. Point and Print Restrictions is enabledSecurity Prompts have been set to "Do not show warning or elevation prompt" for Installing and updating drivers. Restrictions on qualified servers or forest level have not been checked.

I'm having the same problem that is mentioned above. SSDP is started, but no printers are displayed after clicking "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer". However, if I click "the printer that I want isn't listed", I can search for the printer in active directory and find it.I don't think the entry that is marked as the answer to this post is actually the answer. What aspects of the Active Directory/Windows 7 environment have to be configured in order for printers to show up after clicking "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"?

Yes, see http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/ce0f9b0e-e507-427b-bdb7-c70f4d0536ec If you already added printer from the search wizard, you will not see this printer in the search. If you will add it manually (\\printserver\ -> choose printer), you will find all printers in the search wizard. It seems a feature :) mcse^4

Yes guys you just need to use printer location tracking for this to work, follow the links above. Enable location tracking in your GPO and set the locations up, then they will appear.
