Windows 7 Networking issues with Server 2003 - Workgroup
I have a Win7 Pro 32bit machine connected to a Server 2003 R2 Standard in a Workgroup environment and all machines have static IP's. Each is connect to a 50 port Cisco Un-Managed Switch. The problem is Sometimes everything works just fine no problems what so ever other times Win7 will not connect to the server, it see's it but other times it says "Windows cannot access\\"Server Name"" that there maybe a problem with your network, and sometimes it will access the server just fine but if i close out of the browser it will not display the shares again. Now I have about 30 machines on the network that are running Windows XP that work like a charm and if I use my laptop which is 7 ultimate and XP Mode it works fine but for whatever reason it does not want to work flawlessly on Win 7 no matter the version. Several are Win7 Pro 32bit and my laptop is Win7 Ultimate 64bit, same issue. Everything is in the same workgroup, can access the internet just fine but when it comes to file sharing there are some huge setbacks from a business point of view. I tried to access the server when I started this thread and got the error and I just tried it again and it connect fine...this is a huge problem that I am uncertain on how to fix...please help. Also after doing some research some people said to turn off TCP/IPv6 which didnt work and to try going into the Local Security Policy-Local Policies-Security Options-Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level and changing that to "Send LM & NTLM - user NTLMv2 session security if negotiated", which seemed to help a little but not fully....please any assistance will get greatly appriciated...any additional info you need from me please feel free to ask.....

Hi, Please let me know the exactly error message when trying to connect the server. I suggest updating the network adapter driver to the latest version on Windows 7, disabling any security software on both sides. Also check if the following KB is helpful. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2194664 If any switch or router is used, please also update the firmware from the manufacture's site. Best Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Sorry I was out of town Niki, the exacat error message is "Windows Cannot Access \\Primary-Server\Tech" "Checkthe spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network Problems, click Diagnose" then under "Details" it says "Error Code 0x80070035 The network path was not found" if I go to an XP machine I have no problems or if I just wait a little bit it starts working again????? This thing is driving me crazy, especially becuase I am trying to upgrade all the computers here to Win 7 Pro but I am having second thoughts...also I have tried this.... Windows 7 Pro & 2003 Server click the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function. Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings. In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try -Enable network discovery -Turn on file and print sharing -Turn off password protected sharing -Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption. Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings. 3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares but still the same problems, any help I would greatly appreciate it..THANK YOU I had stated another thread hoping for more replies, at this point I am open to all suggestions.....Also idk if it helps but this is a fresh install of Windows Server 2003 R2 standard, there is no firewall enabled on it, all manual IP's a Cisco Switch (Model: SG 200-50) which is brand new (same problems with old netgear switch). Which is up to date on it's firmware...For some reason I think it's a timing out issue I do not know why that is because I am using Administrative Credentials, but I just have a hunch that is the issue....And thank you for your response...

Also I checked out that link you sent me, downloaded the Hotfix but it said "The update is not applicable to your computer", I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit R2/SP1 so it should be applicable but it says that it is not.....

Mindo, I don't work for Microsoft.. just a IT grad. If I understand correctly...Your setup is far from configured correctly. Assuming that your hardware is rock solid and you OS Licenses are decent, I would assume the "Road Map To Recovery" could take at least a couple months to straighten out and implement. Best to you, jason. jason.p.rousseau@live.com
