Windows 7 Network connections are stuck in Public mode
Good Day, I have tried to apply the following solution, both manual and fixit for my local system; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2578723/ However, I am still unable to change the setting to another Network profile, still stuck with Public Network as the default. I have logged in locally with an account that has local Administrative rights on the system. Any suggestions as to whether or not there is a reg key that can be modified to change this setting, or is the only work around a re-install of the O/S for this if the KB does not work? I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1. Thanks, powderskier9

Hi, Please navigate to the following path to configure that you have the permission to change network location: Type secpol.msc in the Start search box, open Local Security Policy Editor, go to the Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Network List Manager Policies. In the right pane, double click on All Networks, enable Changing All Network Locations . Also. I would like to share the following article with you to understanding how Windows 7 network identification works: Network Location Awareness (NLA) and how it relates to Windows Firewall Profiles - Microsoft Enterprise Networking Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs Regards, Alex Zhao TechNet Subscriber Support If you are TechNet Subscription user and have any feedback on our support quality, please send your feedback here.Alex Zhao TechNet Community Support

I have the same problem. I get a PC up and running and in mid-confiiguration NLA opens the Public profile instead of the Domain Profile. It takes a re-install to get it back to where NLA opens the Domain Profile. Zhao's remarks were of little help. I've read explanations, and as usual, especially for MS, there is no help when it comes to the very frequent occurrances of when something does not work. Zhaos' instructions, even to use the secpol.msc are wrong. They do not correpsond to my pc's with Windows 7 professional installed. What OS is he referring to? There is no opion to "enable Changing All Network Locations." Besides, who needs a workaround when you want it to just work correctly? The point is to not work around the sys, but to have better resolution to the unexpected. This means saving valuable time that could be better spent improving rather than fixing what should not be broken in the first place. The most expensive part of using MS product is the immense time-conusmption involved in troubleshooting failure and the real lack of expert guidance. It makes an Admin's life really far less productive and then you ask, is another way better? More efficicient? Less time-consuming? Something other than MS?

You always have the option to seek help from a professional repair service. I don't think these forums were ever established as a substitute for professional repair service. These are peer-to-peer end user forums for the purpose of exchanging information about problems in Windows. All the better if you find a solution here, but there is no guarantee you always find one. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi lgilmore, Generally, when you connect computer to the domain network and if the windows 7 client does not select domain profile then . we should restart network location awareness service from (Services.msc) services console and check if it switches. Also, there is a known issue for NLASVC with regards to profiles, and there is a hotfix about it: The network location profile changes from "Domain" to "Public" in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524478 This applies to both windows 7 and SP1.
