Windows 7 Mandatory/Roaming Profile Query
I have a school system which I am supporting that has mostly windows 7 workstations and some Windows XP. I wish to use a single mandatory profile for all users to keep things simple. In previous windows versions i.e XP I would setup a reference machine using a template domain user and then log on as administrator and use the 'copy to' button to move the profile onto the server with everyone permissions. I could then set the profile path in active directory and the users would use the single profile. My understanding is that this behavior has now changed for Windows 7 due to the fact that the 'copy to' button did not really work properly. I have currently performed the same action as above but used the windows enabler util to activate the 'copy to' button. I do seem to be getting the odd issue with this though probably due to the historic reasons of this method not working properly I have come across this technet article that references making changes to the local default user profile and change the roaming default network user profile but nothing to do with making a single roaming profile mandatory for individual network users http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289 or even linking this profile to multiple users. My question really is what is the correct process that I should be following. I can't really see how that technet article applies as I need a network user to make all the changes with regards to installing programs from the network and storing those settings in the profile/profile registry that can then be made mandatory and attached to all users. Hope this is clear am I missing something? Thanks in advance

Hi Jonah Beck, Thanks for the post! In order to achieve your goal, I thinks you can share a single mandatory profile across users. Since you menthioned you have both Windows 7 and Windows XP clients, you need to use different profiles based on which OS that the user log on. For Windows XP, please refer to: How to assign a mandatory user profile in Windows XP For Windows 7, please refer to: Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide Regards, MiyaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Sorry, Maybe my post wasn't clear I already have folder redirection setup and have seperate profiles for windows 7 and windows xp. The problem is that the copy to function no longer exists in Windows 7 to move a profile to a network share due to the fact it didn't work properly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289 covers a process to move a default local profile to the network but can't quite see how this applys for me. Basically the behaviour I want is a single mandatory profile that holds the various customisations that I set and that all staff pupils and teachers connect to(one mandatory profile for all users). If it is no longer possible to use profiles in this way how is this behaviour now set. Historically I would log onto the network as template domain user. Setup profile. Log off. Log on as admin. Use the copy two button to move the profile to the server and adjust the permissions. I think the tech net article above is the solution but I am not quite grasping what needs to be done as historically I would make my customisations using a domain user as all software etc is on the server but the technet article above only referres to local users. The lack of a copy feature for domain users seems a bit backwards but maybe i am just missing something. Regards Jonah
