Windows 7 LAN Gaming Issues
Hi, I saw a similar unresolved post about this. Recently went from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit), and can now not get LAN games to work (tried this on both Red Alert 3 and Battle for Middle Earth), having previously had no issues whatsoever. When I click create game, it kills the router for some reason- the network stops working! (I have checked this by Alt-Tabbing to desktop and checking the connection etc.). It's really bizarre- checked firewall permissions etc., tried turning firewall off, tried router reset, tried updating drivers on the PC. Tried disabling IPV6 but this also did not work. As soon as I exit 'Create Game' within the computer game, evertything returns to normal. As I say, everything worked fine on Vista... Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Duncan

Hi Duncan, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Update the router’s firmware. 2. Ensure this game is not blocked by the firewall. You can run the following command in an elevated command prompt to disable Windows Firewall temporarily to have a check: Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off Note: This is just for test; please turn it back on with the command “Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on”. 3. Reset Windows Firewall settings to default and see if it works: 1) Click the Start Button. 2) In the search bar type “wf.msc” and press Enter. 3) Right-click the root “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer” and choose “Restore Default Policy”. 4) When the prompt appears, click Yes. 5) Reboot the computer and check the issue. 4. Add a firewall rule for this program: Add or Edit Firewall Rule Firewall Rule Wizard: Scope Page 5. Boot the computer to clean boot and check if there are any conflicts: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 Hope this helps. Thanks. Hi Nicholas, Thanks for replying. I had a crack at the Firewall changes (reset to default, added rules, tried switching it off etc.) but no joy unfortunately. I have a suspicion that it's something to do with the firmware too- i'll see if I can unlock the router and manually update the firmware, and will let you know if I have any success! Regards, Duncan
