Windows 7 Interactive Login during dial-up
Hi
I wonder if anybody can help, I am using Win7 professional and I'm having problems getting a network connection to work properly. I have created a connection of type: "communications cable between computers" and can successfully connect to the device.
However once the device is connected I need to be able to show the terminal window to allow the user to enter a modem command of "ato" then press enter to continue. If I tick the option box in the security tab on the connection properties to "show terminal
window" it doesn't show. Also I have experimented with a script to do this for me but again the connection just seems to ignore it. I should add that this used to work on XP with no problem.
Any ideas?

What do you want to achieve? Do you want to connect 2 PCs via a serial
cable or do you want to dial up a remote connection to a remote PC or
do you want to open a terminal session to a connected device?
Only the first setup is covered by the connection type you have chosen.
In this setup there is no need for a terminal window, so you can't show
it.
If you want to create a dialup connection you have to use this type of
connection and if that runs over a modem you can show the modem window.
If you need a terminal session to a connected device you can use any
terminal program to connect to the device e.g putty to name one.

Thanks for your reply.
I'll explain exactly what I do, or did via windows XP before I 'upgraded'.
I use the laptop as a tool for communicating with a lot of rs232 based equipment, as well as newer equipment. In this instance I connect a laptop thru a dial-up connection to a handheld radio acting as a modem in order to transmit small data files. Unfortunately
there is a need as part of the connection procedure for the user to type "ato" to force the radio modem into data mode. This
should be able to be achieved, (as it was in XP), by ticking the option box in the dial-up connection properties under the Security tab, by "Interactive logon and scripting", marked "Show terminal window".
The issue I have is that ticking this box to indicate that I wish a terminal window to appear after the connection has been setup is not working, ie the window does not appear so the user cannot force the radio (modem) into data mode. This terminal mode
is not the same as using PuTTY or Procomm etc, it is part of interactive logon which is sometimes required. The fact that the tickbox is there suggests that it
should be doing it, but it doesnt work.
I have rebuillt the laptop with a fresh build of Win7 and removed all other connections/modems in case of conflicts but got nowhere. I've now reverted to WinXp for the time being as this is not the only issue we have with Win7 eg compatibility with older
programs that work quite happily under WinXP, and yes I have tried compatibility modes.
Overall I'm very dissapointed with Win7. It appears that it's abandoned any real attempt at being both a useful tool and a gaming/surfing machine in favour of the latter.

Hi,
Did you install the latest modem driver?
Also, please check if this handheld radio modem is compatible with Windows 7.
Regards,
Sabrina

If I understand you correctly you want to open a dial-up connection via
a radio modem to some other PC/device.
Then it is not correct to create a "direct connection via serial cable"
dialup connection. Instead you have to create a dialup connection via
modem. And as modem you have to select your radio modem. If you can't
choose that modem, then you have not installed the driver for this
modem. Look into device manager, if you can find your radio modem
there. If it's not listed under modems but as unknown device you need
to install a driver for that modem, which is Windows 7 compatible. If
you are using Win 7 32-bit the WinXP drivers should probably work, too.
BTW your explanation, how that driver works in WinXp, shows me, that
even under WinXP the modem/driver only works with a rather nasty
workaround.
But in general you will have to accept, that newer software does not
support out of the box all sort of legacy devices - and that has
nothing to do with the usability of that software for all types of
applications, but with the lack of drivers/software written for the
legacy device to support newer software.
So for your problem you have not to blame MS Win7, but either your
legacy hardware producer/vendor or the person whom wrote the drivers
for that device.
