Windows 7 Icon Behavior Settings - OK does not save settings - they are automatically reset to original settings
I have set the icon behavior for "Windows Explorer - USB Device Not Recognized" to "Hide Icon and Notifications", but Windows 7 64-bit keeps resetting back to original setting everytime the computer restarts or comes out of sleep mode. So I keep get a warning about a disabled usb port (disabled in Device Manager). Note I do not have always show icons checked.

In my opinion, you can click Restore the default icon behaviors to reset the settings in the Notification Area Icons. After that, you can connect your USB device again, then change the "Windows Explorer - USB Device Not Recognized" setting to "Hide Icon and Notifications.I hope this can help you.John

John's suggest does not work. I reset all default icon behaviors, and then set the "Windows Explorer - USB Device Not Recognized" setting to "Hide Icon and Notifications", but that setting does not stay set. I still keep getting the notifications. BTW, I am not connecting any USB device. Apparently one of the USB ports is just defective.

you can try to reinstall USB controllers to fix your issue.Reinstall USB controllers-----------------------------Use the Mouse================First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:1. Click "Start" button, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. Use the Keyboard================First, please disconnect all USB devices. Then, go through the following steps:1. Press "Ctrl + Esc" to open the “Start” menu. 2. Type “devmgmt.msc” in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.3. In Device Manger, press Tab and use "Up" and "Down" to move the highlight to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".4. Press "Right" and expand it.5. Press "Down" to move to the first item and press "Delete" to remove it.6. Repeat the step 5 and uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all controllers automatically. John, How can I disconnect ALL USB devices when my keyboard is a usb device and the computer won't start without a keyboard connected? Do I have to go out and purchase a PS2 keyboard?
December 25th, 2009 6:47pm

Can you let me know if your mouse is a PS/2 mouse first? If yes, you can remove the USB keyboard and start the on-screen keyboard while logging on your computer. You can get more idea about the on-screen keyboard via the following link:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Type-without-using-the-keyboard-On-Screen-Keyboard Then you can try to reinstall the USB controllers.Good luck!

Hi, I only found "Windows Explorer - Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" in the Notification Aera settings. Does the "Windows Explorer - USB Device Not Recognized" refers to this one? In addition, I would like to know why the USB port is disabled, is it broken?I suggest performing the following steps:1. Open Device Manager, double click on the USB port you disabled.2. Click the Advanced tab, uncheck the box "Don't tell me about USB errors", click OK. If the issue persists, you can test it in a new account:Create a new user account====================1. Click the Start Button, type User Accounts in the start search pane and press Enter.2. Click Manage use accounts. 3. Click Create a new account, and type the name. 4. Choose account type as Computer administrator. 5. Click Create Account. 6. Log off and log on with the new account.I also suggest updating BIOS and device drivers to latest version.Hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT

I have tried everything suggested - except for the last suggestion which doesn't apply to Windows 7 since Windows 7 does not have an Advanced tab where you can uncheck about USB errors. This problem seems to be simply a bug in Windows 7. I do not have any USB devices connected - I changed my mouse and keyboard to PS2 connections. I just apparently have one defective USB port. Windows 7 provides an option to turn off notifications re USB notifications from the taskbar - but this option DOES NOT WORK - it's that simple. Whenever I change to not notify me - it reverts back. How can this be anything other than a bug in Windows 7?

First, I would like to tell you that we can unckeck the option before "Don't tell me about USB errors" in Windows. You can refer to the following steps.1. Open Device Manager, find out the defective USB port. Right click on the USB port, then choose properties. 2. Change to the the Advanced tab, uncheck the box "Don't tell me about USB errors", click OK. Of course, you can uninstall the l USB controllers.Good luck!John

Did find the "Don't tell me about USB errors" in the Host Controller Advanced properties, but not in the properties for the defective USB "Unknown Device". If no errors notifications appear in the next few days, then we can assume that fixed it. Thanks
