Windows 7 Home Premium Network Password Issue
At work, I have a windows 7 HOme premium laptop connected wirelessly to my "network". A printer and a few computers. I cannot connect to the "server". IT has windows 98 on it. I know terrible but it's just used for storage back up, nothing more. I get the "ENTER NETWOK PASSWORD" box. We do not have a password for the network. The server has a password but that doesnt work. I do not have a password on my laptop. Its beyond frustrating. Password protected sharing is off. I had XP desktop before and it worked fine. The server shows up on the network (sometimes it doesn't) and always asks for this password when I try to connect. I have the settings changed to password protected sharing is off...

I am guessing you would need to dumb down win 7 to talk to win 98I would also set a password on the 7 boxclick the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function. Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings. if still no access try In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try -Enable network discovery-Turn on file and print sharing-Turn off password protected sharing-Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption. Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translationNetwork access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and SharesNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accountsNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and share

I did a search for both "gpedit.msc" and "secpolmsc" in the start menu at the bottom where it says "search for program or files" and it came up blank. I did a search on "Computer" and it showed up but it was empty, said MMC could not create the snap-in.I created a password for my laptop and changed all the settings listed. Still nothing... IF it matters, I have win 7 home edition...

Hi, We have stopped supporting Windows 98. The network compatibility is not considered in the design of the network in Windows 7. You may follow the steps to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. 1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Create a DWORD key under Lsa and set: Name: LmCompatibilityLevel Value: 1 4. Restart. If the issue is not resolved, I suggest you use another system that is supported instead of Windows 98.Arthur Xie - MSFT
