So, I've been given a laptop that belongs to a friend of my wife's to install some antivirus/malware with out the user password to get through the windows logon. This being the case, I did what ive always done which is to boot in safe mode/w networking for the install. Upon trying to start safe mode i get sent to the startup repar utility which tells me it has found an issue it can't fix. The machine is eMachines E725 Laptop, T4400 Intel, 3gb RAM, 250gb HDD Problem Signature: Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem Signature 03: unknown Problem Signature 04: -1 Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover Problem Signature 06: 51 Problem Signature 07: CorruptVolume OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 I've already tried multiple boot attempts using last known good cfg, safe mode, normal, etc. I admit that I'm new to Win7 and this new repair utility but lets just say I'm a little more than concerned about this CorruptVolume sig on 07. Any help here would be appreciated!

I suggest you boot in Safe Mode again and try to remove the antivirus. If it does not work, boot in WinRE and use System Restore. After removing the program, please reinstall the antivirus and antimalware in Normal Mode.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I've got the owner looking for his recovery discs so that I can boot from the CD drive and try to recover the OS. @Arthur: I actualy never got to the install process with the antivirus. As soon as I tried to go in via safe mode it got stuck in this startup repair loop but, thanks for the reminder on the AV compatability. Just out of curiosity, I've not found a boot mode that will give me a command prompt to run diagnostics from the shell. Does Win7 allow for this without booting from a recovery disc or do I just have to get the disk to get access to the diag tools? TIA!

You can boot in WinRE either with or without Windows 7 installation DVD. Here is an article that introduces this part of functions.
