Windows 7 Home Network With XP
Sharing Windows 7 resources such as Root Directories and Printers has not improved from Vista and is a nightmare! Should be a single step to share printers and root directories by sharing folders etc. Can see the XP resources ok from Windows 7 but the other way around no go. Get acces denied etc. Have disabled all firewall etc and get a varity of error messages. Can you share a root directory from a Windows 7 machine to XP machines or not? Also Outlook 2000 will not run properly on windows 7 (as is the same with Vista) Comes up with Address book problems and won't let you send.On the plus side performance much improved on Vista.

Sharing root directories is a security risk. Do you have any passwords set on either machine? Are the user names the same?

That's bollocks! In a trusted Zone with a proper firewall it is no more a security risk than sharing any other directory from root.

Well as Me and my fried tried to figure this for a year. (Since Vista) I guess solution is to open advanced settings of Windows Firewall and add your XP computer IP to sevices as file and printer sharing.

In Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems, sharing root directory is available. You need to make sure that File Sharing and Printer Sharing are enabled. Additionally, you need to create the same username\password on two computers. If there is any error when you try to access the resource in Windows 7 RC from Windows XP, please let us know the detail of the error message you received.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Well, I believe that Username\password are not required in local domain. And the pasword requirements can be turned off. But it depends of course.

Ok-Thanks. To start with...Printer sharing. (Until I get Printer Sharing working I'm guessing that sharing Windows 7 Drives isn't going to work.)I have a Cannon S330 on the Windows 7 Machine. When I browse for a Network PrinterI can see it in the Workgroup list. I click on it and I get asked for a User Name and password.I Enter the User Name and Password that I'm logged into with on the Windows 7 Machine andget the message back that "The Credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this Printer"

Thank You! I did have to re-install win 7. Something got a bit screwed up. After I did a re-install I set up same user accounts on both machines and all went well.
