Windows 7 Gadget bar problem.... Specifically the weather gadget
So this just happened yesterday. Description: Stopped working Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: sidebar.exe Application Version: 6.1.7600.16385 Application Timestamp: 4a5bc9e1 Fault Module Name: msvcrt.dll Fault Module Version: 7.0.7600.16385 Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bdfbe Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 0000000000003f2a OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 13321 And I've narrowed it down to the weather gadget.. Every time I add it, it will crash my sidebar... How do I go about this? System restore did not do any good. Did a sfc /scannow nothing found wrong. Tried the solution from a search here which states deleting contents of setting.ini (which worked, but when I use the weather gadget I'm back to square 1) I hope anyone here could help me in this matter Thanks, Psy~ P.S. http://www.mediafire.com/file/jlyt1mtdzyw/gadgetbar weather.zip This is the Problem recorder file

I don't have an answer but was wondering what happens if you don't use the sidebar, just use the weather gadget by itself, directly on the desktop? I have 4 copies of it open on my desktop at 20% Opacity so they're only visible when I mouse over them. Just close the sidebar, then right click on the desktop and select Gadgets. Double click on Weather, see what happens. If nothing else, this will tell you if the problem is with sidebar.exe or the weather gadget itself. Also, what happens if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking. Can you use the weather gadget with the sidebar there? It may be some other software is interfering and causing the problem. I found this to be the case in several links a Google search for sidebar.exe c0000005 turned up. All were on a system that hade upgraded from Vista to Windows 7.Rich

If the issue just occured recently, you can try system restore. In addition, you can try to test the weather gadget issue in a new account. Good luck. John

Rich I am using it via Right Click on desktop>gadgets> Now when I try to drag it to desktop it crashes the gadget app and shows the dialog box with the error in 1st post.

If the issue just occured recently, you can try system restore. In addition, you can try to test the weather gadget issue in a new account. Good luck. John I have tried it and it works on other profile, meaning my current profile is corrupted right? Well how do I go about copying current data from the profile broken into another account, new account. Earlier I've tried MS fix for broken profiles but sadly I could not copy the contents of my old profile it says "Application Data needs permission from PC\Owner, Retry | Skip | Cancel" if I chose skip it won't copy the files, by the way UAC is turned off before doing this things... Thank you guys for the quick response, and sorry if idk how to multi quote.

At this point, you can use the Windows Easy Transfer to transfer your profiles and settings to your new account. You can try the folloing steps. 1. Go to Start –> Type Easy Transfer –> Click Windows Easy Transfer in the search results.2. You will get a welcome message to Windows Easy Transfer. Click Next.3. Choose an external hard disk or USB flash drive.4. choose This is my old computer.5. Check the box before your current user account, and click Next.6. You can input a password if you want. 7. Click Save to save the transfer file. The transfer file will be a single file with the extension .MIG. Please remember the location. 8. Now, you can create a new account, and log off and log on the new account, 9. Open Windows Easy transfer again and click This is my New Computer.10. Choose "Yes, open the file" to navigate to the .MIG file.11. Check the box before your old account, then click the Advanced Options above the Transfer button, then you choose which user account you want to transfer.12. Click Save and Transfer. Now, you can see what are the files that were transferred. You can also see a list of programs you might want to install on your new computer.Test if the Gadget works fine in the new account now. If it works fine, you can delete the old account completely. If not, please delete the new account, and move to the step 8, and repeat the step 9 and 10, then check the box before your old account, and click on the Customize button next to this old account, and uncheck the box before Windows Settings, then click the Transfer button.Good luck!John

Allright John, will try in a few mins, just got home from work.. Oh btw forgot to mention that SFC /scannow said it found some corrupt files but were unable to fix. So should I give the easy transfer thing a whirl or pop in my 7 disc and repair install? :(

Well John I have done what you have posted and thanks it fixed the weather bar!!! Very good, although gotta configure the other applications that I use, btw sfc /scannow 's log was opened on notepad to find the string "cannot repair", but I did not find anything that said could not repair... So Is there really a corrupt file in my system? Thanks again!!

I am glad to hear my suggestion is useful. First, I would like to tell you that you can run the Windows Easy Transfer without the Installation DVD, you can run it after logging on your computer. In addition, after you transfer the old file, you should have the old settings. As your new question, you can refer to the KB929833 to determine which files corrupted. Good luck! John
