Windows 7 Freezing at startup
NOTE: This is resolved . - No reply is needed. - This is now just here to help others. A week or 2 ago, Win 7 froze after it had finished loading. Seemed to be as soon as it got to desktop, it froze completely. Since then it has done this maybe 4 times, and I found I had better success if I left it off for a while (RAM issue perhaps). Tonight, it is on every boot up, even after a long cool down period. To troubleshoot a little, I tried unplugging the G-15 keyboard, and booted up and it seemed fine for about 30 seconds, then froze. Safe Mode (with Netorking) works fine. Event viewer show the last item in 'Application' log to be a warning Source: Search Event ID: 3036 Level: Warning User: N/A OpCode: Info Task Category: Gatherer Keywords: Classic The content source <csc://{S-1-5-21-478426044-3270226024-3440026899-1001}/> cannot be accessed. (HRESULT : 0x80040d0d) (0x80040d0d) A quick check of the registry shows that this key is my user profile. I found mention that when this happens to Vista machines, it can be caused by the account being a member of Guest or Domain.Guest, and Windows loading into a TEMP profile. A quick check shows me I'm in my proper profile. The closest I could find to Guest that my account was a member of was 'Homeusers' Security Group. I removed my membership from there. That didn't help. I disabled the Windows Search service, which seems to be what is causing the error, and this gave me about 15 seconds of usage before it froze again. (I thought I was on a winner on this one, too) I can't find anything informative in the event logs at this point. My Restore points only go back to after this started occurring (Looks like I can't extend the life of restore points from Safe mode, nasty). I've installed all the Test updates and a new Nvidia driver a couple days before it got this bad. I may try a restore and see if it at least improves my chances of a successful boot up. Reliability report shows nothing. Using MSconfig, I tried a Diagnostic startup. This seems to be okay. I've started up the Windows Event Log services, and looking into the more obscure logs, but still not finding anything. Oh, I can get to the link to setup my backups now I'm out of safe mode, but it gave an APPCRASH. hehe. I'm getting close to a full Windows reinstall here :) Rolled back Nvidia driver to a February release. Set MSconfig to use Normal mode. Rebooted. And it was fine for about 40 seconds before freezing again. MSConfig set to not load Startup items, but to load Services. Lasted about 2 minutes this time. Entertainingly, it froze up just as a hit a mine in Minesweeper. The Build: Windows 7 x64 RC Build 7100 ASUS P5KC Rev 1.03G Intel E6600 4GB (2 different pairs of OCZ all with same timings) GTX260 (216) (Palit make, I think) OCZ Apex 60Gb SSD Took out the 2 older pair of OCZ RAM (The Reapers), booted up and I've been running stable for a while now (5 mins) without the startup programs running. Managed to win a hand of Solitaire. Set MSconfig to Normal and rebooted, and Windows looks to be frozen at the "Starting Windows" screen. No colourful animations yet. Oh, there they are. Took close to a minute on that screen. And I'm looking stable again. Won a hand at Spider Solitaire. Looks like my first guess of RAM issue may have been the right one. Not only has it improved stability, but it's improved my ability to win Windows games.
