Windows 7 Freezing Up
Is anyone familiar with the drivers needed to control SARA Raid Drives under the Storage Controllers segment of the Device Manager in Windows 7 Pro (64bit)? I am running two sets of Raid 1 drives. My system started to freeze up and was requiring multiple reboots to get running again (Safe Mode, etc.). Under the Storage Controllers listing in Device Manager, it listed multiple drivers: 1) “Intel® ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO SATA RAID Controller” and 2) “Marvell Inc. – Storage – Marvell 61xx Raid Controller”. After Reloading W7 with “Fresh Copies” eliminating various applications with no success (system still freezing after performing updates from Microsoft, I finally reloaded the system and performing the update from Microsoft, LESS the update for the Marvell controller. Now I just have one controller running (the Intel controller) and so far, no freeze up. Am I correct in presuming that this was indeed the culprit? Summer Info on my system is as follows: Computer: Computer Type ACPI x64-based PC Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Professional OS Service Pack Service Pack 1 Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 (IE 9.0) DirectX DirectX 11.0 Computer Name XXXX User Name XXXX Logon Domain XXXX Date / Time 2011-06-09 / 09:21 Motherboard: CPU Type QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550, 2833 MHz (8.5 x 333) Motherboard Name Asus P5Q3 Deluxe (2 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 3 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR3 DIMM, Audio, Dual Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394) Motherboard Chipset Intel Eaglelake P45 System Memory 4096 MB (DDR3-1066 DDR3 SDRAM) DIMM2: Corsair XMS3 DHX CM3X2G1600C9DHX 2 GB DDR3-1066 DDR3 SDRAM (7-7-7-20 @ 533 MHz) (6-6-6-18 @ 457 MHz) DIMM4: Corsair XMS3 DHX CM3X2G1600C9DHX 2 GB DDR3-1066 DDR3 SDRAM (7-7-7-20 @ 533 MHz) (6-6-6-18 @ 457 MHz) BIOS Type AMI (05/26/09) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1) Display: Video Adapter ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series (512 MB) Video Adapter ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series (512 MB) 3D Accelerator ATI Radeon HD 3870 (RV670) Monitor Samsung SyncMaster 2494SW (Digital) [24" LCD] (HVCZ600513) Monitor Samsung SyncMaster 2494SW (Digital) [24" LCD] (HVCZ600516) Multimedia: Audio Adapter Analog Devices AD2000B @ Intel 82801JB ICH10 - High Definition Audio Controller Audio Adapter ATI Radeon HDMI @ ATI Radeon HD 38xx - High Definition Audio Controller Audio Adapter Creative SB0880 X-Fi @ Creative SB X-Fi Audio Controller Storage: IDE Controller Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller Storage Controller Intel(R) ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO SATA RAID Controller Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive Disk Drive WD My Book IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device (465 GB) Disk Drive WDC WD5000AAKS-22YGA0 (465 GB, IDE) Disk Drive AFT CF PRO-9XP USB Device Disk Drive AFT MS PRO-9XP USB Device Disk Drive AFT SD PRO-9XP USB Device Disk Drive AFT SM PRO-9XP USB Device Disk Drive JetFlash Transcend 8GB USB Device (7 GB, USB) Disk Drive Volume1 (298 GB, IDE) Disk Drive Volume2 (465 GB, IDE) Optical Drive JLMS XJ-HD166S ATA Device (16x/48x DVD-ROM) Optical Drive TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223F (DVD+R9:16x, DVD-R9:12x, DVD+RW:22x/8x, DVD-RW:22x/6x, DVD-RAM:12x, DVD-ROM:16x, CD:48x/32x/48x DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM) SMART Hard Disks Status OK Partitions: C: (NTFS) 298.1 GB (250.9 GB free) D: (NTFS) 465.8 GB (407.3 GB free) G: (NTFS) 465.8 GB (257.8 GB free) Total Size 1229.6 GB (916.1 GB free) Input: Keyboard Logitech HID-Compliant Keyboard Mouse Logitech HID-compliant Cordless Mouse Network: Primary IP Address 192.168.1.3 Primary MAC Address 00-22-15-F6-ED-F7 Network Adapter 802.11n Network Adapter Network Adapter Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller Network Adapter Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (192.168.1.3) Peripherals: Printer Adobe PDF Printer Fax Printer HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909n Series fax Printer HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909n Series Printer Microsoft XPS Document Writer Printer Quicken PDF Printer FireWire Controller AT&T/Lucent IEEE1394 FireWire Controller (PHY: Agere LFW3226/3227) FireWire Controller Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 1394B OHCI 1.1+ Compliant Link-Layer Controller (PHY: TI TSB81BA3) USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB1 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB Universal Host Controller USB2 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB2 Enhanced Host Controller USB2 Controller Intel 82801JB ICH10 - USB2 Enhanced Host Controller USB Device 802.11n Network Adapter USB Device American Power Conversion USB UPS USB Device USB Composite Device USB Device USB Input Device USB Device USB Input Device USB Device USB Mass Storage Device USB Device USB Mass Storage Device Battery HID UPS Battery Battery Microsoft Composite Battery DMI: DMI BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc. I've seen recent reports that the Marvell 6x drivers as supplied via MS Update is problematic, download and install it direct from Marvell or the motherboard/add-in-card maker (ASUS, in your case). It looks like you should also install the chipset driver from ASUS, too.

Just curious, do I need that driver? It seems as though I always run into trouble when updating drivers from ASUS or anywhere for that matter.

If you aren't using the Marvell 6121 controller, I suggest disabling it in the BIOS settings. Windows wouldn't try to install drivers for it then. It might save you some time at startup as well, as the controller would no longer be checking for drives.
