Windows 7 Free Upgrade for Dell Studio XPS 1640
Hello, With the laptop I purchased from Dell there was to be a free Windows 7 upgrade. I did receive a link and a download to install Windows 7. However, I had not received the DVD for the install. I have since reformatted my computer to Dell's factory settings. In that factory settings was Windows Vista. I have contacted Dell and they said they can not replace that CD as it was to come from Microsoft. I have no received that DVD and now can not install my Windows 7. They said I should contact Microsoft. They can send me a trial Windows 7 DVD but it will not have the Product Key for my original upgrade.

Did you save the upgrade email at your ISP? That's probably the only way to recover in this situation. Perhaps Microsoft support could confirm your upgrade and resend the link with the product key. You need to develop a backup routine. Using the backup utilities in Vista\Windows 7 would have backed-up your Windows 7 download and created a system image of Windows 7. You can also create a System repair disk to use in this situation to restore the system image. I know that computer manufacturers do not make this obvious to most users. The use of backup utilities also. Windows 7 will prompt you to do so. You can learn about back-up and restore in Start>Help and Support>search backup, restore, system repair disk. (Vista or 7) So, log in to your ISP directly and check your emails and call Microsoft support.
