Windows 7 Explorer Windows not opening
I have a problem with accessing explorer windows in Win 7 Ultimate RC. I click on 'Start', then 'Computer' and the explorer window pops up on the taskbar but it's not accessible. I click on the icon and it pops up in the mini-show window but that's it. It won't maximize so I can't access it abd do any file maintenance. About 3 or 4 months ago, the same thing happened with my Firefox downloads window not being accessible and now the problem has migrated to all explorer windows. Does anyone have a solution to this bug?

Sounds like it could have been moved off screen. Try pressing alt+space then M then use the cursor keys to see if you can move the window back to a visible position.

Hi Rudeman666, First, please go to Start, type explorer.exe in the Search box and then press Enter. Can we launch Windows Explorer? If not, scan the system using anti-spyware and antivirus software to see if the system is infected. Also, run ShellExView to disable third party extension of Windows Explorer. To do so, please follow the steps below: 1. Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2. Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt. 3. Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox. 4. Click Next and click Finnish. 5. Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. 6. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard. 7. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes. 8. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. What is the result? If the issue persists, please see if the issue occurs. If so, please test the issue in Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. Also, does the issue occur in a new user account? Regards, Linda

Eureka! Thank you very much! I haven't the faintest idea how all my explorer windows got moved offscreen to the right as I didn't drag them there, but that's where they were. I had seven explorer windows tabbed up on the taskbar, none of them accessible, but the keyboard trick worked and I was able to drag them back one by one and close them. Now when I run explorer, the window starts up onscreen. I had thought of them being hidden on the edge and had tried to move the mouse past the edge to see if I could catch them, with no sucess. Now why does this happen? My screen is 1920x1200, with my taskbar on top and Rocketdock hidden on the left. When I drag this Firefox window to the left as far as it goes, it automatically goes full screen height, half screen width. I drag it to the top, it goes full-screen. I drag it to the bottom as far as it goes, only the top bar is visible. I drag it to the right, it disappears totally and I have to use alt+space+M to drag it back, because it's not mouseable any more. I exited Rocketdock just in case it was interfering but it still happens. Is this normal or a bug? I thought a window dragged to the extreme right was supposed to automatically maximize to the right half of the screen? My card is ATI HD 4870x2 and I have the Catalyst 9.7 drivers.

Thank you for your response and I have printed out a copy of your message for future reference to Shellexview. I tried the solution suggested in the post previous to yours and it worked. My windows were hidden way off to the right of the scrreen, which I didn't think was possible. Before I did the alt+space+M keyboard move, running explorer.exe DID open up another explorer window on the taskbar, but not onscreen. Do you have any ideas why the right area of my screen operates as I mention in my reply above, or is it normal for Windows 7?

The function you mentioned is Aero Snap. For more information about this feature, please refer to these websites: Designing Aero Snap, Snap. As you mentioned, if you enable Aero Snap, when dragging the window to the right side of the desktop, it will fill right half of the screen. Therefore, I would like to confirm if you have set the display for dual or multiple view with two or more monitors? If you have set for dual view, the window will appear on the right side of the secondary monitor. Also, could you please capture some screenshots of the current situation by the steps below? Capture screenshot ============ 1. Please reproduce this issue, and then press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2. Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save". 6. Please upload the screenshot to your SkyDrive at www.skydrive.live.com and let us know the link.

I don't have dual monitors, just a 4870x2 card with dual display capability. I checked my Catalyst driver and it did have 2 displays set up, even if I didn't have the second monitor. I deleted the second display and now Aero Snap works properly. The window does snap to the right now, instead of disappearing on my 'invisible' second monitor. My problem is solved and thank you for your help.
