Windows 7 Enterprise x64 can syn with Internet time.
I have a windows 7 enterprise laptop which is part of a domain. I tried to make it to syn. time with Internet NTP server instead of AD DC while I am on business travel. But I found I can't. I opened date and time applet, in Internet Time tab, I choose time.windows.com as NTP server and then click Update Now button. But I got error message as "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing. The peer is unreachable." Then I downloaded NTP tool which is a third party tool acting as NTP client. This tool has no problem to communicate with time.windows.com. So there is no fire wall issue. I run "netstat -an" command on my laptop and found UDP port 123 are used. Further checkup, I found this port is used by "Windows Time" service. So tried to run command as following w32tm /config /syncfromflags:MANUAL /manualpeerlist:"time.windows.com,0x8" /reliable:yes /update w32tm /resync The first command finished without error but the second returned as The computer did not resync because no time data was available. Is it because my laptop is member of domain so it can't be set to syn. time with Internet? Any suggestion? Thanks!

You may wind up breaking Kerberos (among other things) doing this if you aren't careful (which in turn will cause you many more headaches-but it takes being more than 5 minutes off). I would suggest you simply change the time zone to where you are going if you are trying to sync to the local time rather than change from the default time sync mechanism of NT5DS.Brandon Wilson - Premier Field Engineer (Platforms)

Try to change the server to another one and see the result. If the issue persists, temporarily disable antivirus and firewall then try to sync time. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. please note that if your time is more than +2.5min or -2.5min you will not be able to login to the domain you can change the time at the PDC thou :)

I am aware of the possible Kerberos issue. That is fine. I just want to take this chance to understand more about time service. I have read almost all technet articles and blogs these few days regarding this topic but none has given a clear answer to the question. Based on those article, what I have done should be good enough to make the computer sync. with Internet NTP. Once I run the command, I can see the registry key does change as expect. But when run w32tm /query /status, it shows the time sources still the CMOS lock. Don't know how windows could be messed up with this simple function.
