As far as I know you can boot natively only a Windows 7 vhd. All other systems are not supported. There are is an unsupported way of booting a Vista vhd natively by replacing the boot environment of Vista with Windows 7 boot environment as they seem to be compatible. But again this is not supported as the boot files are regarded as an integral part of the operating system.

Only desktop operating systems that can natively boot are Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate editions. Windows 98 can not natively boot to a VHD. SeanMCTS: Windows 7

Perhaps the path is incorrect. Where is the bootloader for windows 98? Is it himem.sys or win.com or system.1st?

If I create an image and put it on a partition on a physical disk, I need to know where the path is or it will not boot. I do not know where it is, but I think it might be one of these files: himem.sys or win.com or system.1st. Please help.
