I ‘m having an issue with my desktop shortcut icon’s pointing to files on a server share disappearing. This has happened a few times and seems to happen over the weekend. I have seen a few posts with this same question but all answers seem to have different solutions. I have gone into the Task Scheduler>Microsoft>Windows>Diagnostics and disabled this task. Does anyone know if this is the solution to the disappearing icons? Thank you Elery

Hi,When did this issue start to occur? Is there any newly installed software?Are you sure only the shared files encounter the issue? When will this issue happen during the weekend?When the icons disappear, try the following:1. Start - Run2. Type services.msc3. Look for "server "in the list, right click then click start..If this issue only involve the shared folder, I have a couple of questions:1.) Did you completely power down your Windows 7 computer before this issue occur? 2.) Do you use roaming profiles for your Win 7 box? 3.) Is the server likewise powered down over the weekend? 4.) Do you use secure passwords for your network? 5.) If so, does anyone else have access to your password?

That is the only reliable solution I have seen on various forums. It has worked for all my Win 7 computers.It would be nice if MS would enable us to specifically exclude that form of the taks so windows can do whatever other things it does when this function is enabled... but...

Disabling the task seemed to take care of the issue. The Icons did not disapear this weekend. Most of the icons were shortcuts to server drives. The scheduled task must delete shortcuts that don't seem to be valid. I use my laptop on the weekends when it's not connected to the network so this makes since.
