Windows 7 Devices with Removable Storage
I'm using windows 7 ultimate. When I explore "My Computer", among other things (like my hard drives and cd drive) I see 4 other drive letters under a section called "Devices with Removable Storage". When I connect a USB device then it'll map to one of these drives however even if I disconnect the USB drive the drive letter continues to display as if there's something connected. You click on it and it'll say "Please insert disk .." or something to that effect. I'm not sure of the reasons for the choice of this behavior but personally I find it extremely annoying. I was hoping there is a way to configure the windows to only display devices that are actually connected. Any help would be much appreciated.

How To Hide Empty Drives In Windows 7 Unlike earlier version of Windows, Windows 7 comes with a simple and unique option that lets you hide empty drives in Windows 7 explorer. This option is very useful if you have multiple empty drives and don’t like to show the empty drives in computer folder (explorer). For the steps, go here: http://is.gd/ehD3e

As much as this seems logical it did not work in my case. Not quite sure why. I tried to google this setting and I do see several other users seeing what I see which that the empty drives still show up. I'm not sure this setting is intended for the case I presented above and is not functioning correctly or that this setting actually addresses something different.

Not sure how the setting got altered to begin with, but the solution at http://is.gd/ehD3e provided by Thamyris fixed the problem for me. Thanks!
